Children's books

One of my favorite hobbies is reading and I hope my son shares that with me. I know it's probably a little soon, but I want to start collecting children's books for him. For the life of me ( be it pregnancy brain or old age lol) I can't remember some of the books I read in elementary school that were my favorite. The only one I can think of is "The Corduroy Bear". What were some of your favorite children's books growing up?

  • I loved the wind in the willows series and all the oz books. They're both better for older kids though.
I love for little ones "on the night you were born" by Nancy Tillman and "I am small" by Emma Dodd. Tear jerkers.
  • Where the Wild Things Are.
    Anything Dr Seuss.
All the Mercer Mayer Little Critter books.

  • Little gorilla is a good one! And brown bear brown bear!
  • Good Night Moon
    Go, Dog, Go

The "Carl" books were my jam as a kid - they're about the dog, Carl, playing babysitter and I just remember wishing and praying it was possible!
  • Books a million has a really great list of 50 books to read before age 5!
  • My daughter is obsessed with the Little Critter books. We also read The Very Hungry Catipillar every single day. I loved both of these as a child. Some of my other favs were If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and The Giving Tree.

  • @lnord7 oh my GAWD. the stinky cheese man!! I read that a million times growing up! I have to find it!
  • Dr. Seuss books are great for early literacy because there's a lot of rhyming and repetition; we have a collection of those for DS that he'll share for DD

Go, Dog, Go is a favorite as well as The Eye Book and The Foot Book

On the Night You Were Born and Wherever You Are, my Love Will Find You (also Nancy Tillman) are beautifully written and illustrated and DS enjoys them

The Little Mouse, The Big Hungry Bear and the Red, Ripe Strawberry is DS's all-time favorite

We're also getting into Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? since DS is starting to learn his colors

And while we don't have this book, Good Night, Good Night Construction Site is my nephew's favorite

I bought DS Make Way for Ducklings for his birthday, since yes about ducks and cars (his favorite things)

And Pat the Bunny is always great for little ones because it has all the different textures to touch.

As for older readers, I loved the Chronicles of Narnia, the Little House on the Prairie books, and Anne of Green Gables. Also, Charlotte's Web.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, just some of our favorites. Previous posters also have some great ideas.

  • Rhyming books with rhythm are always a win at our house. Two that I haven't seen on here yet are:
    Smile Pout Pout Fish
    Giraffes Don't Dance

DD loves both! She has been obsessed with her pout pout fish books from the very beginning! :)

Great thread. I am an avid reader and started stocking up on Children's books when I was pregnant with my first. I hit up rummage sales, garage sales, I have librarian friends and an elementary school teachers that have gifted me some of their old collections they were discarding. I also got my daughter signed up for Imagination Library through our school district when she was a year old and she has been getting a free book a month in the mail for over a year now and will continue until she turns 5 and starts school. Needless to say I have a huge library-like collection that spans three different rooms in my house (the nursery, DD's room and the living room) and my daughter loves to look at books (she's also started to "read" to herself). Look into things like that to jump-start your collection.

Lots of great suggestions on here. And go with what some of your old favorites were for sure, because you'll end up reading them over and over, and you'll want to like the books!

  • What a great thread! Most of our favorites have been mentioned above.

My mother signed up for some Dr. Seuss book club that sends us 3 books every month. We have gotten the classics, the books he has written under a different name, Berenstein bears, and some others that I don't yet know the connection. My daughters love the books and DD1 now anticipates their arrivals.
  • Where the Wild Things Are because that has been one of my favorite children's books.
We already have a copy of the Velveteen Rabbit because we read a passage from it for our wedding
Make Way for Ducklings because I live in Boston!
I love Eric Carle so I would love to have all of his books.
Shel Silverstein is also a must.
Mo Willems is also a must - I love Elephant and Piggie!
  • Loving this thread! Before I became a librarian, I worked at a bookstore with the kids books. Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, but I love Sandra Boynton. But Not the Hippopotamus, Snuggle Puppy, and Personal Penguin are a few of my favorites of hers. I loved Shel Silverstein and the Sesame Street books (Monster at the End of this Book was my favorite!).

School Library Journal did a top 100 picture books list (https://www.slj.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/SLJ_Fuse8_Top100_Picture.pdf) and the New York Public Library has a good list (https://www.nypl.org/childrens100) if you need more ideas. :)
  • I am going to a few of the Goodwills in our city to see if I can find some of these books.  I saw online that goodwill has hundreds of them for less that $1, but the shipping is ridiculous.  I wish there was an option to pick up at one of the stores.  I guess I'll go see what I can find.  I might also try the used bookstores.
My favorites growing up were: Mercer Mayer books, Bernstein Bears, Toad and the Frog, Eric Carle books, Clifford the Big Red Dog.  So many more to even think about.

My husband said his mom is going to bring us some Serbian kids books when she comes in January.  I'm pretty excited for that so he can read them to her.  I'll have to learn the translations! haha.
  • Thanks ya'll! Definitely refreshed my memory :)

    The Boxcar Children!

My baby shower is themed "build the baby a library"! It's so important to me that my kid reads, and I hope he likes what I like; I love the idea of reading the books he reads in middle school and high school so we have something in common!
  • This is the best thread!! I love the "How Do Dinosaurs..." series. They always make me laugh. Richard Scarry books are also very good, lots of great vocabulary words with pictures.
  • I used to be a Pre-K teacher so my LO already has quite the book collection. Some of my favorites are:

    Anything by:
    Dr. Seuss
    Eric Carle
    Mo Willems
    Laura Numeroff
    Denise Fleming

I also love the Scat the Cat series by Rob Scott and the chicka chicka boom boom variations.

I also love all of the variations of the gingerbread man.
  • Definitely recommend Sandra Boynton books for babies. They're the only ones that don't make me feel like I've gone crazy after reading them several times.
  • I'm a preschool teacher and I think I've bought twice as many books as onesies lol. Gotta love Scholastic Book Club deals. Almost all of the above are in baby's growing library, but I'd have to add the Pete the Cat books, my kids love the catchy songs.
  • Look into Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. It's not available in every area but it's a great program. I have my one year old signed up. Each month they send her an age appropriate book. She loves it! We just got her signed up and the first book she got was The Little Engine that Could. Her favorite though is Brown Bear.
  • These are some great titles, ladies! I'm an elementary teacher, and I also love the Elephant and Piggie books (and anything written) by Mo Willems. They're simple, funny, have lots of expression and animation! Kids of all ages love them...:)
  • Mine: Liza Lou and the Yellow Bellied Swamp

    DH: The Very Hungry Caterpillar
