Breastfeeding

Nursing after breast reduction surgery

hello all! I'm a first time mom due in August, and I really want to breastfeed my baby. However, I had a breast reduction 7 years ago when I was 14 and I'm unsure of how that will affect my ability to do so. At the time of my surgery my doctor told me this may be an issue when I decided to have kids but there was no way to tell until the time came. Do any of you have an experience in this? Have you had a similar surgery and tried to breastfeed, and did it work? Thanks!

Re: Nursing after breast reduction surgery

  • I had reduction surgery 2 years Ago...just delivered a little beauty on Saturday and have been successful with nursing so far. Lactation consultant was impressed with latch (not sure if that would have anything to do with surgery anyway but..) I will say my nipples are absolutely killing me. I know this happens to all nursing moms but feel like the surgery could have amplified that..good luck!

  • My reduction was 15ish years ago, and I was told the longer ago it was, the better recovery of tissues you'll have.  It's also important that the nipple wasn't mucked around with (i.e. cut, etc.).

My lo was born in May, and we're struggling with weight gain BUT I do seem to have 'enough' milk.  I am using herbals/domperidone to get my flow to be faster.  Baby is a bit lazy on the latch, and something of a grazer, but I'm not sure if that's due to my supply or her personality.

It's still a challenge, and I'm still working with my LC, but I hope you'll have good success to at least partially bf.  There are two other women with reductions at my clinic, I was told, both exclusively bf'ing.
