BV & Sex

my doctors encouraged me to start having sex (I haven't since my second trimester) to get my cervix more thinned but i seem to get BV every time I have sex with DH for a year or so. not sure what threw off the ph between us but I suspect it was a LEEP procedure I had done in 2014 (doctor swears this couldn't be the case) but it's really the only thing I can think of that changed.

ANYWAY, this makes me reluctant to have sex now because I obviously don't want an infection this close to delivery and don't want antibiotics that make me vomit my brains out.

Sex sounds like a good idea and doc advised but I'm curious what you ladies would do? I'm honestly surprised it was suggested though they have so many patients in sure they maybe just forgot about my recurring BV! I've already had it twice during my pregnancy and seem to have avoided it by not having sex. I hate this!

Re: BV & Sex

  • What is a BV?

  • Sounds like you should be on a probiotic. That being said, probably should ask dr. before starting one since you're pregnant. I know most are totally safe and most Dr's encourage them but I am not your dr so I don't know if you have any special circumstances. Also they take a while to start working so in the meantime you should convey your concerns to your Dr about having sex and getting BV. It's probably not worth going through because most likely sex won't help and then you'll have another issue to deal with.
  • Also maybe try one of those special vaginal washes to help maintain pH balance?
  • I thought about those before I got pregnant. I do eat yogurt every day so that should do it on the probiotic front. so far hasn't!
  • We've been having sooo much sex. I don't think it works... A man made it up!
  • I used to get this with DH too (before pregnancy).  Two things contributed to it in my case:  using condoms, and DH's 'well endowed' size.  My doctor said that my vagina would become mildly irritated by either/both, as in, there would be microscopic (painless) tears.  The cure for us?  LOTS of lube -- every time!

That being said, if I were you I wouldn't have sex.  BV sucks.  You don't want an infection this close to giving birth.  The prostaglandins in semen can possibly help thin & dilate your cervix but there is no conclusive evidence that semen actually does this; instead, we know that the prostaglandins in semen are very similar to those used in certain induction drugs (so we assume that the prostaglandins in semen have a similar effect).  Bottom line is:  you're going to give birth anyway, sex or no sex.  If sex will almost definitely cause BV, but only possibly helps to prepare you for labor, why risk it?

Just curiously, what do probiotics have to do with this? Is BV somehow related to gut issues?
  • BV is bacterial vaginosis. it's a rather annoying infection that can be very common for some women, especially after sex. a lot of times it can come about from not being that clean but other times it can be completely unavoidable. it's a ph problem that cause the bacteria in the vagina to grow. kinda like a yeast infection but different.
  • Probiotics don't just help the gut. They give us healthy normal flora in the vaginal and rectal areas as well. Yogurt does have good bacteria, does not have all or as much as taking an actual probiotic can give you.
  • I've tried a few different probiotic pills prior to pregnancy also but found that they mostly upset my stomach (I know that's contrary to what they're supposed to do). I suppose I just haven't found the right one. I'm definitely planning on looking further into this after baby is born.
  • There are liquid probiotic supplements that are in the refrigerator (at least at Whole Foods) that are a little more tolerable on the stomach and I think about the same price as some of the other probiotic supplements.
  • My midwife recommended Culterelle probiotics before I gave birth. It has a good bacteria called lactobacillus. She said there's no way to eat enough yogurt to get the same amount of good bacteria that is in the pill.
  • I had a LEEP in dec 2013, and haven't had BV. I've had it a couple of times in the past, but I found cultrelle helped! My doctor also recommended a product called Luvena. It's a prebiotic suppository, but they also make lube ( my LEEP has made it harder to get lubed up naturally for me. I can be turned on as all get out and still feel dry.. When I was a waterfall before lol). Luvena has helped, couple it with cultrelle. It may take a month to help you, but it's worth it.
I also had to switch condoms, turned out I have a latex sensitivity "down there"!! Lol. Imagine having to explain that one to your hubby... Lol! Oh well!
You could also mention to your doctor that your DH seems to "give" it to you after sex.. Maybe they can treat him as well.
