I am having trouble when it comes to brushing my teeth...I gag uncontrollably every time. I have heard that switching to cinnamon or kids toothpaste works. Anyone have any suggestions?
I have the same issue! For me it seems to be just holding something in my mouth that is the issue so I don't think the type of toothpaste would help at all. I had huge issues with gagging on my prenatal but fixed that by switching to gummies. Not sure what to do about the brushing though, hopefully someone has a good tip!
@ainverso you can floss then brush without paste or dip the brush in mouth rinse to get the flavor but avoid the bubbles. The main objective with brushing is disrupting the plaque with the bristles not really the paste. Plaque/bacteria are what make bad breath, so as long as it is removed you will be fine.
I swapped to Tom's Silly Strawberry, but I mostly have had a problem with the tooth broach touching my tongue. I heard an electric toothbrush may also help.

I found not brushing first thing in the morning helps and as long as I don't go anywhere near my tongue, I'm good! Last pregnancy I had to switch toothpaste to the crest whitening toothpaste vs straight up mint flavored crest. The thought of gum makes me gag as well unless it's cinnamon.
I've had this same issue. What works for me is using a tiny amount of toothpaste, waiting until any significant nausea passes until brushing, brushing slowly, and avoiding the brush touching my tongue (as in, literally pushing my tongue to the opposite side of my mouth). For me, it's not nearly as bad at night so I get a good brushin' in then.
I was just at the dentist today! We discussed this and she told me that if I can only brush once a day or not for very long, make sure I am flossing several times a day. And dry brushing is ok, because you are still disturbing the plaque.
I have this same issue and it is the foam so I used my DD strawberry toothpaste when I already feeling queasy so it doesn't make it worse. I love my mint flavor though so I try to use it when I can.
This has been such a big issue with me too!! When I was having super bad nausea some times I would have to skip brushing because I would start and then puke. It was bad. I too have a horrible gag reflex right now + I can't stand brushing my tongue.
I'm gagging on everything, had the same issue with my first pregnancy: toothbrush, prenatals, soft food (mashed potatoes, yogurt, bread)... the list is endless. It's awful and in my case is not a matter of flavors. I think it's my body making sure I don't choke and keep growing the tiny human.
So happy to know its not just me! I find brushing in the morning after eating something helps a little (I usually brush first thing when I wake up). Same thing with touching my tongue, as long as I don't brush it with toothpaste remaining in my mouth it's a little bit better. I even use fluoride free toothpaste that's based with clay, baking soda, and essential oils....can't imagine switching would be any better since traditional toothpaste made me gag before pregnancy worse than what I use now
Same here.. Brushing makes me gag.. All those fancy toothpastes you girls mention are not available in my country (India) .. We just have regular ones I brush really fast and try to get it over with ., also keeping the quantity of paste less helps
I'm very picky with toothpaste, I only like the crest 3D white. I don't think switching toothpastes would work for me. I used to drink two bottles of water before I showered and now I throw it up every time so I can't even drink water in the morning now (
I wish I had something to recommend. I have been dealing with the same issue. I try to make it for a whole 2 minutes and I can't stop by myself from gagging and stopping early.
I know electric are expensive, but it will change your life. I got one and the vibrating helps your mouth not to freak out when the brush touches your tongue. Gag reflex shuts up. Also my teeth feel cleaner than ever before. DH has had one for years and never goes to the dentist (silly). He got checked this year and had 0 plaque build up the dentist was shocked.
This is a very annoying situation, but I'm so glad I'm not the only one.. I actually have a brand new electric that I haven't opened yet, I'll have to try that and see if it helps.
If you don't want to spend a ton on a super nice electric toothbrush, I have one that just vibrates a little. I forget the brand but I think it's called Pulsar. It works great for me and now it feels weird to brush without the vibration. Also another trick is to hold your breath while brushing your tongue. My tongue is what gags me but I can't not brush it so I've found that holding my breath or plugging my nose works great for the reflex. Can't wait till this is over
