Is this name too princessy?

Is Penelope Belle too princess or juvenile sounding? We are looking for a one syllable middle name to balance out her long first name and our long, harsh-sounding last name. What do you think?

Yes, she sounds like a character from a fairytale (in a BAD way)

Yeah it's a bit too much for me. Lotta L's going on in there :). Do you want suggestions?

  • I like it!
  • After a certain age mn are infrequently used I think it's fine.
  • It's a little frilly, but my main problem is the repeated -el sounds.

Penelope Claire (Fairytale in a GOOD way)
    Penelope Eve
    Penelope Faith

  • I don't think it is too princessy.  I do think there are too many L sounds.

The first two names that came to mind instead of Belle were Brynn or Claire.

  • Yup, I agree with PPs, it's a little too frou-frou for my tastes but not really bad. It's really the repeating -el sounds that bother me.

  • Thanks for your input everyone! I've been stalking middle names for months. We are strongly considering Penelope June also but I didn't really want a "J" middle name. Everything else has been vetoed by DH.

I know the "L" sound is repetitive in Penelope Belle but I don't mind it so much. And I think Penelope Claire looks good on paper but sounds like Penelop-éclair to me when said out loud!

  • I really like it, I do think it's a tad princessy but it's very pretty.

If you have a long last name, I would avoid Penelope as the first name. Most people don't say or write their middle name as often as first and last, so I think it's better for her first name, not middle, to be short. Think of when she's in kindergarten learning to write her first and last name! Maybe she'd most often go by a nickname though, like Penny.
  • Thanks for your input but we are already settled on the first name
  • I have a Penelope, but we call her Poppy :)

  • It's a little cutesy for my taste. I love Penelope but I've never been a fan of Belle

  • I don't think it's to princess-y but I don't think Belle fits as a middle name very well with Penelope.

Penelope Grace, Penelope Anne, Penelope Mae, Penelope Rose.

or if you warm up to the "J" middle initial, Penelope Jean, Penelope Jane, Penelope June.
  • I think Belle as a mn always sounds a little princessy/juvenile. I like something like Jane, Claire, Faith, or Hope much better.

Do you have any family members with short names you could use?

We are honouring a grandfather (Lorne) with Lauren/Loren

I'm all for meaningful middle names because you don't really use them anyways.
  • My association is with the meaning of the word. I like the name a lot. And the Disney association is a good one too.
