VIP Question

I'm 24w3d and not sure if I should be worried. This just happened this morning which I the third time so far but each month for the past 3 months I've had a charlie horse/bad leg cramp in my back hamstring in the same leg. It makes me jump out of bed and I walk it out and usually lasts 3-5 minutes. Should I be worried? I was going to call the dr later about it. TYIA

Re: VIP Question

  • I know that charlie horses during pregnancy can be common, but it wouldn't hurt to ask the doctor. Often they're linked to a lack of potassium I think (?) or dehydration, so trying to increase water intake and eating a few more bananas might help?

  • I just went to the doctor on Wednesday and mentioned the Charlie horses I am experiencing. She said its totally normal just drink lots of water (as the last post recommended). I've been drinking tons of water since then and the past two nights I haven't had one. I would call your doctor for a peace of mind though!!
  • I get them all the time during pregnancy. They are the worst! Nothing to be worried about.
You can try increasing your water and eating bananas but not much helps.
I find standing up and putting pressure on the leg helps.
They are a common pregnancy symptom though.
  • Every pregnancy book I've read talked about this being a common pregnancy symptom. Water (hydration), bananas, and potatoes (potassium) can help.

Thank you everyone. A little peace of mind now.
  • Normal. Drink lots more water.
  • What PPs said. But more pressing - why is this question VIP?
Yes, this title confuses me, too. Lol

Charlie horses SUCK. They have woken me up a few times now.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Does anyone else know the "Amazing Horse" meme?  That damn song is running through my head now and it's horrible.

If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

Wow, ok sorry, I didn't title it to your standards. I have only been on the bump for like 3 months and this is my third or fourth discussion I posted and the past two had people starting problems and being nasty with me. I thought this was a community for support and advice, not to criticize and act like your better than me. You don't know me or my medical history so something not so important to you could be to someone else. Think I'll just stay off the community boards or better yet find another app. Thanks to those who were more supportive and good luck to you!

Well it was a vip to the op and I guess if you read it and didn't think it was a big deal you could have carried on and read another thread. No need to pick fights with people just because you don't think it's a big deal!! Let's all be friends!!!
  • Sheesh! Who cares what she labelled it!just carry on maybe and find another that interests you!!! I know this is an Internet forum and anyone can post replies however they want but to continue to poke at how she labelled her question is just silly and pointless, pp had already given her great advice about it. And @Ceridwen77 maybe she thought it was a Very Important Problem.
    Say it with me!!!

If she did think it stood for something else (which, as PP mentioned, is kind of absurd at this point in one's life), she could have searched any number of terms and found her answer without starting her own thread.  There have been posts here about leg cramps before (with suggestions to remedy them), and if all else fails there's always Google.  I don't even understand why anybody would think that a charlie horse is a very important problem in the first place, even if that is what she thought it stood for.  Charlie horses are a part of life, especially if you're not staying properly hydrated.
  • Why are charlie horses called charlie horses? It's quite a conundrum for my addled little brain...

    But...that's not...what VIP stands for...

Wait I forgot my exclamation points. !!!

Lol I also had a cute little winky smiley face too but it never showed up ;)

Here's what I found (there's more to this article, but this gives you a place to start):

This term for a cramp or pulled muscle in the leg is originally a baseball term, or at least it first gained widespread use in baseball jargon. The reference is a mystery. No one knows who Charley was or why he may have had a lame horse.

The earliest known use of the term is from the Boston Globe, 17 July 1886:

Several years ago, says the Chicago Tribune, Joe Quest, now of the Athletics, gave the name of “Charlie horse” to a peculiar contraction and hardening of the muscles and tendons of the thigh, to which base ball players are especially liable from the sudden starting and stopping in chasing balls, as well as the frequent slides in base running. Pfetlor, Anson and Kelly are so badly troubled with “Charley horse” there are times they can scarcely walk. Gore had it so bad he had to lay off a few days, and is not entirely free from it now. Williamson, too, has had a touch of it.

Magnesium! And everything else pp said.
But, mostly take magnesium supplement before you go to sleep.
  • What in the everlovingeff? Dear sweet baby Jesus. The lack of common sense is astounding.

Also potassium! If you're getting frequent or severe muscle cramps or Charlie horses, I recommend a tablespoon of Blackstrap molasses in the morning and night until they calm down and then just either morning or night to maintain. It's really gross, but the Blackstrap has more potassium then other types of molasses and your body absorbs nutrients more effectively from food than from vitamins
