I'm 34 weeks on Saturday and my BF wants to take a mini road trip to Arizona. So far my pregnancy has been great but I know that doesn't clear me to take a 4 hour trip. I agreed on the condition that we would stop so I can stretch my legs and later today I am going to call the doctor to ask if its ok to take the trip. I was wondering if any of you ladies have taken a long trip??? closer to the due date?

Re: Tripp!! Advice

  • Im sure you'll be fine, but check with your dr of course and make lots of stops to stretch your legs.

  • I took a 6 hour road trip at 35 weeks with no issues.  My only advice is make sure you take a route with lots of bathrooms and stop to pee frequently (even if you dont have to).  Half way through our trip we got stuck for 3 hours because of a serious accident that closed the highway, if I hadnt just hit a bathroom I would have been in big trouble!
  • I am 34 weeks, leaving for NH tomorrow. (10 hour drive) I was cleared by my dr but she said I needed to drink tons of water and get up and move around, whether or not I have to use the bathroom, at least every 2 hours. Also, be careful of elevation! Talk to your doctor about where you will be going and even pay attention to the route. Our plan included a trip up mt Washington and our doctor STRONGLY recommended that I skip that part. It's for my father in law's memorial service so it was important but of course we decided against it. My dr said flying is fine because the cabin is pressurized (although airlines can reserve service during the 3rd trimester if it looks like you're ready to pop) but anything over 3000ft is not good for baby. The pressure affects them, can decrease their oxygen supply in the blood and can even promote early labor. Be careful and good luck! <3
  • Going on a 6hr trip tomorrow at 36wks. Heading to my in laws house and FIL is an OBGYN so I figure if something happens then I am in capable hands.

I've heard this before but never put it into perspective until now... how upset must some ladies be when they look "ready to pop" at like 25 weeks?
  • My doc said travel until 36 weeks is fine. I went on a trip via plane to SC (live in DC) at 33 weeks. It was no big deal. I'd just want to be in an hour's drive of a hospital so like no camping out in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception personally

  • Just got back from a 6 hour trip away from home for 4 days, I was fine. Put some couch pillows in the car for your back and prop your feet up when you can!

  • You should check with your doctor, but in general travel is fine before 36 weeks if you're having an uncomplicated pregnancy. Just make sure to stop and walk around regularly. I went on a 7 hour car trip at 34 weeks and it was completely fine.
  • I just took a 5 hour car trip at 35 weeks, and aside from swollen feet it was fine. If you can, put your feet up in the car!
  • Thank you ladies this is much appreciated and useful I was having second thoughts because its my first pregnancy but yes we will be stopping every two hours so i cant stretch and here in California since its Friday we know were going to get a lot of traffic .
  • UP DATE!!!! my 4 hour trip back from Arizona turned into 13 hours ): we were stuck because the bridge washed off on the 10fwy so after all the traffic going through mountains and getting stuck in mud because my bf was determined to get back home we made it safe and sound. Baby behaved well in my belly just that my feet are still a little swollen and legs. It was an experience my poor legs felt it. We left Arizona at 4:45pm we got to the house at 5am
  • Sure. I cleared it with my doctor first but I went on a 4 hours trip a week and a half ago at 36 weeks. My little nephew was born 7 weeks early and I wanted to be there. I stopped and stretched twice and drank lots of water. I was even by myself. I was fine.
