I wanted to ask if any one has been pregnant before while being plus sized? Or maybe knows some people who have been? I am, 11 1/2 weeks and am beginning to wonder how my added weight will effect my pregnancy? Will I show later? Thanks for any advice!

Re: Plus size mommy!

  • I was wondering if this would come up! i am plus sized too and have been curious as to what to expect for our body type when it comes to showing and whatnot. i feel like for the second trimester, i will just look like i've gotten fatter without that cute bump till the later months, i'm hoping I'm wrong but i doubt it.. at least i know I'm not alone on being a plus sized mama here!

  • I think even at plus size it depends on your body type. I'm considered plus size and was for my first as well. I am 5'2" and 186 lbs. But I have an hour glass shape and had a very flat stomach before my first pregnancy so I started showing around 17 weeks. Plus my height and short torso added to showing earlier since baby had no where to go but out lol.

In espically curious about it because on here, with the weekly counter for the last week or two it says I may have a visible bump, I just assume it will take longer for me to have that, but I'm also a worrier and wanted to know if I'm alone, thanks for making me not feel so alone :)
  • I was 190 lbs when I was prefnsnt with my first child (10 years ago!) As long as you watch what you are putting in your body for nutrition and are not gaining too much weight (I gained 18 Lbs total thay pregnancy) then eventually baby will have nowhere to go but out and your belly will get harder and round out and pregnancy will be noticeable (people started noticing around my 5th/6th months that I was indeed pregnant. Due to circumstances (a surgery and such) I am a bit more plus size with this baby but I know the same stands that as long as I eat healthy and maintain my weight eventually my belly will round out and It will be noticeable....it just may take longer this time.
  • I'm plus size as well and this is my 3rd pregnancy. I felt I didn't look pregnant at all with my first 2

I'm now plus size. I wasn't when I was pregnant with DS. If I put on maternity clothes, people would think I was 5-6 months pregnant. It is depressing.

With my last pregnancy I was a size 16 (about 220 lbs) and I was actually 6 pounds lighter at full term than when I started...I had gestational diabetes so I made better food choices and had lost a total of 25lbs after delivery. My doctor was never concerned as my loss was gradual and baby was perfectly healthy.

Edit to add: I didn't show until around 28 weeks
Praying this is our take home baby. STICK TURKEY Mommy will miss you everyday my beautiful angel. We love you Lilypie Angel and Memorial tickers M/C on 1/05/11 at 11 weeks.
  • I showed later on my first pregnancy becuase of my weight but I had a very defined baby bump the last few months.

As far as other issues, I think it depends on how you are before your pregnancy as far as the other worries of pregnancy.  I didn't have gestational diabetes - I don't eat sugary foods (my plus size is do to a love of carbs).   I was told that we would have trouble hearing her heartbeat due to my weight and we didn't.  I was told that overweight women don't feel their baby move as early and I felt her at 16 weeks - right on schedule.  My daughter was a very healthy 7.8 pounds so it's also not a given that you're going to have a mammoth baby either.

So, while you won't have the cute baby bump that others do, be confident that it will get there and as long as you eat healthy and move around, you definitely don't have to assume that you will have every problem they warn about.
  • Plus size here as well and I was wondering about this myself.

My weekly progress pics aren't anything out of the ordinary -the only thing I feel like it's doing is showcasing my spare tire.
  • Plus size here also, my belly is already starting to pop out (even though I have actually lost some pounds), but I think it just makes me look more chubby and not pregnant. My friend is also a plus size, just had a baby a couple months ago. She did look pregnant around 5 months, so I'm hoping it's the same for me!
  • I am plus size as well and think about this too. I have a longer torso and carry a lot of my weight in my torso. I'm one of those people who gets asked when they are due even when I wasn't pregnant. So, I think it will take a while to show unless I wear maternity clothes and stroke my belly constantly. I found this website. https://plussizebirth.com/tag/plus-size-pregnancy/
It has a gallery of plus size pregnancy bumps and some articles. It might give you an idea.
  • I'm a size 12; 5'9, 210 lbs before pregnancy and now at 11 weeks.

That's how I was with my first. I never really looked pregnant, just fat. I gained 10 lbs with that pregnancy. It will depend on where your body carries it's weight. I was a size 16 then, now I'm an 18/20 so I'm not expecting to look to different this time around. If this happens to you, I know it can be upsetting especially with other baby bumps every place you look.

  • I was plus size when I got pregnant with my daughter. I'm plus size now ( I swore I would lose the baby weight, yeah that never happened)

Being plus size doesn't really matter. I was just told I didn't after to gain as much. From bfp to birth I only gained 20/22 pounds
  • I'm plus sized as well. So far I just look a little more pregnant than I should since my stomach was fairly flat before and now cannot go back in because of bloat. But my doctor isn't worried about it at all so long as I eat healthy and move. I think they suggested I should only gain 20 lbs but they also told me I shouldn't worry about my weight until they tell me to because as of right now I don't have anything to stress about. It was a RELIEF!

I guess the benefit of being plus sized is that we don't have to gain as much. I'm 5'6 & 180. Thinking I won't need to gain more than 20 lbs or so.
  • I am 9 weeks with my 3rd viable pregnancy, i miscarried before this one...I am plus too...I had my first child 8 years ago and if my memory serves me correctly...I lost weight in the beginning and my Dr was ok with that bc baby was fine...I don't remember exactly when I started to show tho but I am sure it was later than earlier in the pregnancy with both previous. I also was high risk for gestational diabetes with first but had it with my second as well as high bp with both...being overweight puts us into higher risk categories...but that doesn't mean we can't have totally normal pregnancy. Best wishes to you all.
  • My son was born seven years ago and I started to show most after week 25. Because I am larger I didn't notice his movements until about week 20 to 21. But I had very little complications with having a baby Being plus size. I am now pregnant and 11 weeks and everything has gone beautifully.
