Fluid in kidneys

Before I start PLEASE do not post your negative thoughts or horror stories in this thread. All I'm looking for are people in the same boat as me. Thanks

I'm 28.5 weeks and my baby girl has fluid in her kidneys. It's been there since our first ultrasound. Doc said it's pretty mild so she isn't overly concerned. I have another ultrasound at 35 weeks to see how it's progressing. They say if she's born with it she will be very susceptible to UTI's. Which kinda breaks my heart because I know how awful they can be. Anyone else with this issue?

Re: Fluid in kidneys

  • I had a similar thing with my son. He's 3 now. once he was born we found out that he had kidney reflux, which is what caused it. He had several UTIs in his first year and 2 pretty bad kidney infections. He ended up having surgery at a year old to correct it and has done much better since.  We have to be very careful now that he is potty trained that he empties his bladder frequently to avoid UTIs and kidney infections. Other than that issue when potty training, he has been a whole different kiddo since the surgery. It's scary to think that something might be wrong with your baby, but they can help her! Praying for you both Mama!

  • I have not myself experienced this. But my sister did with her little girl. She too had kidney reflux. She was on antibiotics at all times I believe had many uti s but was a happy playful little girl. She ended up having surgery and no longer struggles with them if I'm not mistaken. I'll pprapray for your sweet baby that this resolves on its own.
  • Antibiotics are a standard line of treatment until surgery, but my son wasn't able to have them. He was born preemie, had multiple immune deficiencies, and had a lot of GI issues and recurrent CDiff. The antibiotics constantly were more dangerous for him, so we just had to be extra careful. We tested his urine weekly at the pediatrician for UTI since he couldn't be on an antibiotic, and did home test strips daily. It's a lot of work, but like i said, the surgery made a world of difference.

My third has a moderate kidney fluid retention. He's had ultrasound scans since birth (he's now 2.5), but he's never had an infection and the doctors are happy to let him be with continued monitoring. Praying for your little one!
  • The outcome depends on the amount of fluid and whether or not there is reflux. After baby is born, the pediatrician will order a kidney ultrasound to see how much fluid there is. From there, management options include watchful waiting, prophylaxis antibiotics, surgery or a mix of both. Best of luck!
  • My daughter was diagnosed with multicystic dysplastic kidneys at my 20 week anatomy scan. Both of her kidneys were full of fluid-filled sacs. After she was born, we took her to a urologist who had her evaluated at Children's Hospital over the course of her first year. Her right kidney never functioned but her left kidney took over and resolved its issues. She hasn't had any problems in terms of UTIs or kidney infections. We're just very thorough with wiping at diaper changes and she gets a bath every night so the area is adequately flushed. DD is 15 months now.
  • Thank you all so much for your input!!
  • Il my baby boy was diagnosed with this at my 20 week u/s. At my 24 week u/s it had cleared up. Dr. Told me that it is a super common thing and it may return but it just means that the pediatrician will need to be notified since he will be susceptible to UTI's. My dr. Also told me that he diagnoses multiple babies a week with this and that's how common it is. He seemed very unconcerned with it causing serious long term damage so I was much calmer after hearing this news. Good luck to you and your baby! I'm sure it will all be fine.
  • My 22wk US they told me same thing for my little boy. I go back for another US Aug 10th. Crossing my fingers.
  • @scgirl1123 best of luck! Keep us posted.
