Traveling with a 9 month old

Good morning :)

We have friends getting married in March 2016 at an all inclusive resort in Jamaica. Our little guy will be 9 months then. Does anyone have any experience traveling with a 9 month old? Specifically to an all inclusive? I plan to still be breastfeeding at that point, but he will also be on solids. The flight for us would be direct, about 4 hours.

A deposit is due next month, so we need to make a decision soon. Any insight, thoughts or cautions would be appreciated!

Re: Traveling with a 9 month old

  • We took a 7 month old to Alaska and it was fine. One thing to keep in mind, if you take a 9 month old, it won't be a relaxing beach vacation. It will just be your usual weekend in a different place with a kid off their schedule. I'm not trying to discourage you, I just don't want you to think it will be relaxing for you. I always feel like I need a vacation after taking vacation because traveling with kids can be draining.

Think food pouches. They are super handy and you can buy a spoon that screws right on the pouch. Very convenient for traveling. I found that feeding them a bottle/ boob as you take off and land helps with their ears.

  • Travel is a topic that has had lots of discussion on the Bump boards (this month plus other boards). Do a search. Google pulls up good tips, too. I've been following the topic for months and there's really not so much to it. It's not so situation-specific, either, like breastfeeding (ie, you don't need to search "9 month old on 4 hour flight to all-inclusive" - just "travel with an infant").

Standard tips include buying baby a seat on the plane if you can afford to, bring some new toys, travel during sleep time, bottle/Paci/nurse during take off and landing, etc. Between Pinterest and your first five Google hits, you won't find much else uncovered, is what I've found in my own explorations.

    Good luck!
