I messed up...

I was hungry and my usual morning yogurt didn't sound good so I nuked a hot dog for 30 sec and ate that (I know, so gross for breakfast). I totally forgot about having to avoid them during pregnancy until I was 3/4 of the way through it. I didn't finish it but now I am freaking out. Should I call my doctor? Has anyone else done this? I feel like an idiot. I don't even usually like hot dogs...

    Nothing to worry about!

  • Please don't call your doctor. There's no reason to freak out. :)
  • Thanks ladies! I am just so worried about something happening to the baby. I keep hoping & praying nothing happens outside my control and this was 100% in my control.

The reason there is concern about deli meat and processed meat is the possibility of listeria contamination.  The typical recommendation is if you are going to eat it, that you heat it up to steaming so that it kills the listeria bacteria.  Sounds like you did that, so you should be fine.

There are mixed views on taboo foods, but the best rule of thumb is just to be smart.  Heat your food up, eat pasteurized foods, and eat fish in moderation.

  • You'll be fine. I've eaten deli meats , without heating it up (yuck!) throughout pregnancy and have 3 healthy kids.

Besides your hot dog was heated up.

@mommygrams - I agree - heated up deli meat sounds gross for a cold sandwich.  I don't subscribe to most of the food restrictions myself, but so many OBs still have a list.  Glad mine doesn't!  Including my cup of coffee every day!

  • @Hernsy I pretty much just stay away from alcohol when pregnant. Other than that I eat what I want. I think I was a little bit more cautious my first pregnancy, but even then I didn't really follow the "rules".

  • Thanks for talking me down! I just am so scared about something happening and I guess that caused me to have my first ftm freak out.
  • Bahaha this just made me realize how any hot dogs I've eaten since I found out I was pregnant. Completely forgot about the "no hot dogs rule." Oops! Oh well.

I never liked hot dogs until my first pregnancy. And then I ate them pretty often.
