Flip flops, how could you betray me like this?!

I'm sure I am not the only one that loves to wear flip flops as my go-to footwear all summer. Lately I've noticed that when I do even a moderate amount of walking in them, I wake up in the night with leg cramps. I'm drinking plenty of water and getting potassium in my diet, so I don't think those are the cause, and I've been able to connect them pretty directly twice now. Now I have to decide whether to admit it's a problem and find other summer shoes.

Anyone else been betrayed by clothing or something else that's normally a favorite due to pregnancy?

  • Flip flops used to be my go to but they are as bad as high heels for your feet and legs and even your back. Try standing and stretching the front of your foot and find some sandals that don't make you grip your toes (i never knew this until i paid attention). I still live in sandals just had to retire the flops.

  • @komorebi I have been avoiding the full panel shorts and pants for that reason, but noticed my side panels were sliding down with my phone in the back pocket yesterday, oops! Yes I probably need to invest in some more non-flip-floppy sandals :)
  • May not be the flip flops as I have been getting leg cramps too. I think it's pretty common during pregnancy. I do have a pair of Nike memory foam ones that are really comfy though.

I'm tall so anything but full panel leaves me feeling lumpy, but the second i get home (or away from prying eyes) i fold them down and let the bump breathe!
  • Just think of it as an excuse to go shoe shopping. Target has some yummy sandals currently.
  • Nike comfort footbed flip flops are awesome!! I highly recommend them.
  • I just bought a pair of aerosoles thongs that have a wide foot strap and cushy sole because I was having issues with toe/foot cramps with the little flimsy kinds. These are much better and maintain the ease of use for me. I think in general we get more leg cramps when pregnant and they are easier to set off.
  • I got some memory foam flip flops and I am drinking a Powerade Zero each day along with my water.   It is getting pretty hot where I live and I was worried about my electrolytes.  I think it is helping my leg cramps a bit but I agree that they seem to be a common thing during pregnancy.

Leg cramps for sure :( Flip flops and other flat shoes were making my feet hurt and feel so bruised - probably due to swelling also. I invested in some super supportive sandals and they made all the difference in swelling, foot pain and even back pain I was having before. I definitely recommend getting something comfortable and supportive to get you through the summer!
  • I know they're not cheap, but they're worth the investment. I realized i couldn't wear any of my sandala anymore due to foot swelling and ankle swelling and they just weren't comfortable. But Birkenstocks are super comfortable. They have the perfect amount of arch support and what not, come in a variety of different styles and colors. Definitely worth looking into and trying to find some on sale or near by so you can try them on and what not.
  • I'm with @komorebi, the full-panel maternity shorts have betrayed me!

One of my two pair of shorts rides up between the thighs, too, so I really hate wearing them.

I'm mostly wearing skirts or dresses now, for this reason. At least my skirts' foldover waist is knitted favorite, so it'd less hot than the maternity panel.

  • I wore heels the other day to work (3-4 inch) and they felt better than flip flops! I have very high arches so I think the shape of a heel feels better sometimes then flat, unsupportive sandals. I may go for those Nike memory foam though!!!
  • i took the advice of a fellow bumpee it was a while back and she said sanuk sandals to be good ....omg they are awesome !!...flip flops give me heel pains, i have these true religion sandals that are super comfy unless i have to walk up n down stairs they are those one strap sandal kind, i like the nike comfort footbed ones but ahh i just wear those all the time they are my house sandals.

  • I got Dansko sandals for my b-day. Not cheap but soooo comfy. They have excellent arch support. The clogs are the only shoes I can wear to work. They're great for standing all day.
  • Chaco makes some flip flops with extra straps, if you really like the flip flop look. Super comfortable.
