Perineum massage?!

so I've hit 34 weeks and decided it's probably the time to make sure I'm mentally and physically ready for this little rainbow baby!
I mean in 3 week I'm full term!!! Can you believe how far we've all come?i remember joining this when I was only 4 weeks gone!

Anyway, I was wondering your opinions on perineum massage?
Will it help?
What shall I use?
How often shall I do it?

Thanks! ☺️

Re: Perineum massage?!

  • My midwife says it helps to have your partner do it. She says it helps you get accustomed to the sensation. I got the suggestion to get the epi-no to reduce chances of tearing.

  • My doctor used perinium massage during labor and used arnica oil with my first (second was so fast there was just time to catch). No stitches needed, though she was also tiny at 6lbs 7oz.
  • Haven't started yet since I'm just under 31 weeks, but I will probably start around 34-35 weeks. I think there are some definite advantages, it would be silly not to try!
  • I started oiling the area in the 3rd tri to soften the skin (like you do to your belly to prevent stretch marks) and will start trying massage with an oil like avocado or coconut around 35 wks. Just test the oil first to be sure you won't react to it!
  • I am giving it a try, well hubs will be helping. Figured it can't hurt and if it helps woo hoo!
  • It creeps me out so I don't do it.

  • I just asked my doctor about this yesterday and she says that it does help and that i can use olive oil. Recommended me starting at 34 weeks.
  • Do it! I still tore bc of (as their ped says) BIG HEAD LOTS OF BRAINS! Lol! And they both came out fast.

Do you reckon coconut oil will work????
  • I think coconut oil is one of the most used oils.
  • So after reading several posts I thought I would give it a liitle try just to see what it felt like.....that hurt like a fing bitch!!!! No way in hell will I be doing that anymore, I think I will wait for my doctor and epidral :-t More power to all you women that can ho through with that, I hope it helps!!
  • my doctor said its not necessary to prevent tearing , if the doctor is providing the correct counter pressure when baby is down and you aren't pushing too soon then you shouldn't tear. But sometimes even if everything is right you might depending on babies head etc , he said some theories beleive it will help but he's delivered plenty of women who don't massage and don't tear.
  • I have never heard of this ever and it kinda freaks me out xx
  • "Can't we just spray some Pam down there?" Lol Baby Mama is one of my favorite movies!
  • I asked my doc about it, cause the hubby was more than a willing volunteer for this duty. She said that as an OB she doesn't recommend it, as she doesn't see any difference in the ease of delivery. She said if I really want to, I can, but the fact that i'm a STM will be help enough. She said that midwifes say to do it, but as an OB they don't. I love my OB and the hospital I go to is amazing, so I trust her. I really didn't want to do it anyways, just asked for the hubby's sake.
