Poll: How do you burp your LO?

Since I can't figure out how to do a fancy poll, I'm going to bring it back old school with multiple choice haha.

How do you burp your baby?

a) Old school over the shoulder

b) New school over the knee

c) Other - please elaborate!

I'm finding LO to be gassier during his feeds and I was taught in the hospital the over the knee approach but everyone keeps telling me over the shoulder. What works best for you? I feel like LO spits up more over the shoulder although a burp does come out.

Same as PP! Over the shoulder works best for me but my DH gets better results sitting LO on his lap.
  • Like @LaurenAnn0405 said I sort of lean her forward so her chest rests her weight into my hand, then use the other to pat her back. This way if she's already sitting in my lap to eat I'm just sort of rocking her forward instead of totally changing her position. But sometimes I put her over my shoulder because it helps calm her down (my kid cries when her eating is interrupted haha) or to get in a snuggle!
  • I do the same thing as @LaurenAnn0405.
  • Both. I go to my chest first and if that doesn't work usually the change of position to on my knee gets one out. If she hasn't burped within 45 seconds I stop though, she rarely spits up and if she's going to burp it's almost instantaneous.

I do both and sometimes I even hold him like a football and pat his back. My LO is the hardest to burp. If he seems to be hurting I warm a blanket in the dryer and then hold him like a football. Works every time.

ETA: I obviously put the blanket under his belly. Don't know why I didn't include that part.?
  • Over the shoulder and sitting bent over on my lap. If one doesn't work, I try the other. What's the over the knee method?
  • Old school.

Both. My husband hangs him on one hand and pats his back. Works great... My hands are not big enough to do it!

  • I do both. Sometimes she burps while I'm changing positions.
  • Over the shoulder first then hold her head/chin while sitting- that does the trick usually.

Confession- burping is my least favorite part of the day!
  • When he needs a quick mid-feed burp, I do it sitting up with my hand on his belly (he can hold his head up pretty well, so I don't have to hold the front of his neck so often). If he doesn't burp that way within a minute, I tilt him back slightly, keeping pressure on his belly, then tip him back into upright/leaning forward position. That usually works, then he resumes nursing.

After a feed, DH burps him old school. He's way better at it than I am, and enjoys it.
  • When she was smaller we did over the shoulder, but now we find better results with sitting on the knee. I burp her every 2 ounces. It just sucks because every time she burps she also spits up. It's traumatic for everyone involved... Sigh. The trick is to get the burp cloth to her mouth in the two seconds after the burp... Which rarely happens.
  • I sit her in my lap and put my hand on her chest and lean her forward a bit and pat her back. She never burps for me any other way so I've been doing this since day one and it works :)
  • Over the shoulder. I was told to do it for a minute even if she's already burped, and longer if she continues.
  • We do everything!!! I've got a terrible burper here!!! I have him do baby sit ups with my hand on his belly applying a little pressure if normal burping styles don't work! @devyns2nd I'll have to try the warm blanket!
  • Both. Whatever way gets it out.
