Pilates and Bar Method in first trimester?

I'm 6 weeks today and continuing to take my Pilates and Bar Method class 3-4x a week. From what I read it seems safe to continue workout routine until the second trimester where it's best to avoid exercising on your back.

My first OBGYN isn't until the 28th. Has anyone talked to their doctor about exercise?

In general I've heard it's fine to continue with what you were doing pre-pregnancy and just listen to your body. I have not seen my dr yet but will continue going to the gym (elliptical, walking, moderate free weights). If I feel extra tired I will do less than usual.

  • I would think it would be fine but I'm not a medical professional.
  • My doc said bar was fine but not to do it if I felt really tired and not to overheat while exercising. My bar class gave me a handout with moderations for pregnancy - you should ask for one.
  • No personal experience (and obviously the Dr is the expert) but my sister inlaw did the bar method for her second pregnancy and she said she really felt it helped her muscles and overall health in so many ways. I wish we had it around here.
  • I have been doing pure barre for over a year and have kept going with the modifications! I think it's really good for pregnancy actually. I could never give up my barre!

Are there a lot of modifications in the beginning?i love pure barre but don't really want the instructors to know yet
  • This specifically I have seen as listed as OK... very encouraged due to the core strength involved.

Like always if it doesn't feel great then don't do it. Some of my normal yoga positions feel a bit shit now because of what I think is RLP but maybe is just gas cramps either way it sucks.  So I dont do them.

  • I've just started doing barre 3 in the last new months and really enjoy it. A friend did it up until the day she gave birth.

The general rule of thumb is to stop doing things when it feels bad/wrong.

I also did a pre-natal pilaties class when i was pregnant before and it was great.

You should definitely tell them. They will give you some information about 1st 2nd 3rd modifications and call out modifications during class. Basically you have to always keep one foot on the the floor... No lifting both feet under the bar. no full sit ups during warm up, ball for abs, you have to change the back stretch part. Just tell them! :)
