For those who never (thankfully) had morning sickness

As I'm sure this post evidences, I have no medical knowledge/experience but was curious if anyone else had the same experience:

I was so fortunate to never have any nausea or ms while pregnant. However, my whole life, when I would get my period, I would be completely nausea for two days and sometimes vomiting. I was wondering if what ever hormones take over during menstruation are the opposite of the prevalent pregnancy hormones and some how this ended up with this result. I literally am so sick with my period - can't move, eat, go to work etc so I completely feel for those still suffering from ms.

I had only very slight MS but I have also had pretty easy (fake) periods--I've been on birth control for as long as I can remember. Well, until now... Anyway, not sure they are really all that related. I think they are entirely different hormones, so your body might just react to each type differently.

  • I don't think they are related. I've had a relatively easy pregnancy (no puking, mild nausea for a couple weeks, mostly just really tired with sore breasts during first trimester). My periods were naturally very light and I never had any cramping or other menstral cycle symptoms, which actually made me worry about my fertility because I knew this was quite abnormal for women including in my family.

  • My periods were terrible until I went on the pill then they were a breeze.

I have just had nausea but no vomiting and the nausea was easily manageable with ginger chews. :)

Not sure about the hormones being opposite.

  • I got like that with my periods, but it was because I would cramp so badly, I would be nauseous and crying on the bathroom floor. I'm not sure if they're related though.
  • I've only had slight nausea, no vomiting, and I think it's mostly genetic in my case...my mom only vomited once thoughout all 3 pregnancies, and it was while traveling which makes her sick when not pregnant. My periods, like my mother's, have always been short, light, and symptom free...I didn't know what a cramp was until after getting knocked up.

  • I never got sick during pregnancy or periods. I've had it pretty lucky. Before pregnancy, periods were pretty light, pain-free and mostly symptom-less. After I gave birth, I had only been having my period for almost a year but they were heavier and longer but still pain-free. This pregnancy has been ridiculously easy also (other than the fatigue) that I could've easily forgotten that I was even pregnant.

I think that your body handles periods and pregnancy separately, however, your period will change after your pregnancy!
  • I do have ms, and I'm not suprised because I can't take birth control, it gives me migraines to the point where I sometimes throw up. I know natural periods don't have the same hormones, but some birth controls do right?

So knowing my sesitivity to hormonal birth control, it comes as no suprise to me that I'd have pretty serious long lasting ms....lol my body doesn't do well with all those hormones!
  • I actually feel guilty when I admit to people, especially other pregnant women, that I haven't had any MS. Nausea every now and then, but really nothing to write home about. I also never had eventful periods, they were pretty short (3-4 days) and would just cramp up a couple of times during it and that would be it. I think I may know the reasoning for mine though, but bear with me because it's a real shot in the dark. When I was getting my HCG tested in early pregnancy, it's supposed to double every 48 hours. My numbers were rising but they certainly weren't doubling, which of course made me and DH think in the beginning that maybe it wouldn't stick (knock on wood). When I explained this to my friend, she thought it might actually work to my benefit. Her HCG levels were always outstanding, and she always suffered terribly with MS. So maybe there's something to that?

They are the same hormones you get for pregnancy and periods. You just get more of them when you are pregnant. Though I'm not a medical professional I don't think your theory is correct. As I get terrible periods and have had terrible morning sickness.
  • I always had heavy periods and they lasted for 5-7 days and cramping was pretty bad, but ibuprofen was my bff haha however, I never got nauseated or threw up with periods. I don't get sick (stomach sickness) in general, so I was worried that when I got pregnant it would be different, but I am 14 weeks now and only had slight nausea for a few weeks. I think it's partially due to genetics as well. My mom had 6 pregnancies and never threw up with any of them.
  • It's funny you mention this because when I was younger my periods were terrible to the point I would be vomiting and curled into a ball and in excruciating pain. I went on the pill and it's helped loads
I'm now 14 weeks pregnant and I have been lucky enough not to have any form or nausea or morning sickness at all. Have been super lucky compared to some of my friends and so strange to hear someone else had similar experiences and then a easy pregnancy
  • I am 15 weeks pregnant now and I've had no MS, nausea or vomiting, My mom also had none in all her pregnancy, be it genetics....lol..... I don't know, only grateful no MS.
  • I've found that my MS (or lack thereof) almost completely mirrors what it's like when I have the flu. When I get really ill, no matter how bad the flu, I never puke, but I get INSANELY nauseous and can't eat anything at all. That's what the first trimester was like for me.

I've also heard having a tilted uterus causes strong period cramps but makes for easier labor? I'd imagine it's more like an old wives tale as every birth is different, but when I told my stepmom I had a tilted uterus, she said "oh you probably had really bad period cramps... I have one too and even though my periods were miserable I delivered all 4 kids naturally and they were pretty fast births". Well, I have deliberating cramps the first 2 days of my period, so here's hoping for an easy labor lol.

It's a gene you have. Mostly past down by your mother. My mom and maternal grandma weren't sick for any of their pregnancies and I haven't had anything other than a few migraines which I had before being prego.

@atheel the one good gene i got from my mom I guess!! The others are IBS and skin cysts and thyroid issues so I guess it was about time I got a good one. You are right though - just asked my mom and neither she nor her mom had ms
  • I've always had horrible periods that lasted 4-6 days and i have been suffering from ms since week 4 and barely at week 13 am I starting to feel human again . I guess just depends on your body

This makes perfect sense to me, because my HCG numbers were high and more than doubling and I've suffered from SEVERE MS. I vomited 3-4x per day from weeks 6-13 and ended up losing a little over 10 lbs. I definitely think there's a correlation here.
  • My HCG were on the lower side too- they always doubled but they were always in the bottom of the range for how far along I was!
  • @arose3eb I first found out I was pregnant at 3 1/2 weeks. My hcg levels were 700something. By 5 1/2 weeks they shot up to over 11,000.. so even tho I have had super high hcg levels, I have had no morning sickness. A little nausea here and there but nothing big. So I don't know... of course every body is different, but in my case, high hcg levels didn't give me ms.
  • @AshleighhSue thank you for saying that! Honestly all of this is such a mystery, you try to make sense of it the best way you can, right?
  • I didn't have morning sickness but I never felt nausea when i had my period either.

we are in the 30% of women who do not have nausea during first trimester!
