Working Out

okay, I know there are certain things you can't do while expecting like heavy lifting and such, so what CAN you do work out wise while pregnant?? I haven't been to the gym since I found out I was with child so not quite sure what to do and what to avoid.

Re: Working Out

  • If you search around on google and The Bump you will find lots and lots of resources. There are several movements to avoid, but much of it depends on your previous level of fitness. This would be a great conversation to have with your doctor! He/she can help to guide you into something appropriate for your unique situation.

Some of my favorite prego friendly exercises, walking, swimming, squats, push ups, planks. That's just my personal style.

  • @mkatefin303 well I was doing powerlifting before I got pregnant and I love it but don't think I can do it for the time being... Lol
  • I'm not much of a cardio girl!!
  • I'm not much for cardio either unless it's it's a fun group class like Step or Zumba. I love, love, love yoga because it works and lengthens so many muscles slowly while improving your focus, balance, and overall wellbeing. When i'm not doing that, i do at least and hour long walk with my dog in the evenings when it's cooler outside.
  • I was totally a cardio girl! Now I'm seriously struggling to walk a half hour on the treadmill. I would walk outside, but I live in Las Vegas and it's an oven right now. The gym is what kept my sanity, as a SAHM. Drop kid off at the daycare, he gets to run around and play with other kids while mommy got some me time for an hour and a half (not all cardio). I still try and go every day, but I struggle. I just got the ok to 'walk only', about 2 weeks ago, so hopefully I just need to build my endurance back up ... It's beyond pathetic right now.

  • I can't do cardio right now, I get out of breath so easily! I've been trying to do more pilates/yoga based workouts to simultaneously stretch and strengthen and that seems to be going well so far. I used to love using dumbbells while working out, but so far during pregnancy I'm finding resistance bands to work with my body better for some reason...and there's no risk of dropping a heavy weight on my head/belly!

  • I pay $80 a month to a trainer I used to use when I lived in the city and he creates personalized pregnancy workouts for me which I track my progress online so he can modify accordingly - some days are strength only and others have strength cardio/mixes. I know it's a little expensive but my gym membership is free with my condo association so I save some $ there and my insurance oddly has a partial reimbursement (meant to encourage people to stay active). Happy to share his contact info if anyone is interested.

I HATE cardio. DH came up with a great idea though, I watch netflix on my iphone at the gym while on the treadmill & elliptical.  It REALLY helps to pass the time!

I just walk. I feel so weak and not really stable footed so I keep it light.

This is a good idea... One of our best friends is a personal trainer who works with pregnant women a lot. He already designs my workouts, he says he is just waiting for the ok from doctor to make my pregnancy routine. My DR says just walking for now :(
  • My ob said ideal excerices are elipticals, lifting light weights, prenatal yoga, kegels, swimming, and other low impact stuff.
  • I think you should do whatever exercise you feel comfortable doing, if possible ask a trainer at your gym to devise a special weight training plan for you.

I'm a runner (I've been running long distance for the last 16 years) ,actually when I fell pregnant I was training for my fifth marathon and though my midwife advised I could continue to run, (at a much slower pace) I haven't run in my first trimester (I'm 13.5 weeks), I did some walk-jogging. Now heading comfortably into the second trimester, I'm going to start running again tomorrow, just 5km to see how I go.  I've also just started doing a PT weight session session twice a week, the trainer has designed it for me and my fitness level - I'm really enjoying it.

Good on all of us who are keen to do some exercise through pregnancy, I think we're awesome!

Haha... I'm a runner so I'm cardio biased! But I'm sure some lifting is fine and good for you. I do a little free weights a few days a week. I also highly recommend barre classes - they are strengthening, not cardio, tough, low impact and pregnancy approved (with some modifications later on :))
