NBR: the dog came back from my SIL itching like crazy. What can we do? Of course just one more thing to deal with:stress about. Really don't need this. Grr
Put advantix or some other flea treatment on the dog ASAP! That will help the most. Vacuum as much as you can. Most effective treatments are from professionals. My moms house had fleas, one treatment from a pest control place and fleas are gone.
Go to petsmart and get frontline. Or get meds from your vet. Do not use any other over the counter flea medications aside from frontline or advantage as the others can cause seizures or worse neurologic issues.
Also vacuum once you have treated the dog, and empty the vacuum to get rid of any eggs.
Contact your vet (obv) because not all flea/ heartworm/ tick medication is agreeable to all dogs and can lead to serious side effects. In the rare occasion our dog (king cav spaniel) got fleas, we medicated with whatever our vet suggested (usually an oral medication for quicker results), one of us gives the dog a mild flea bath while the other vacuums and strips the beds (he sleeps with us). This usually takes care of them pretty quickly- also, try to comb through your dog's hair and grab any fleas you see with tweezers, not easy but doable.
We now give him Triflexis orally once a month to avoid this issue all together, so he can regularly go to the beach, which he loves, eat all the sand and poop out all the sand castles his heart desires, without those pesky sand fleas bugging him. He's our real first baby good luck!
My dog and cat are on comfortis. Advantage and frontline are garbage. But to get comfortis you have to take them to the vet and it will be prescribed to them.

Does it work? I have heard this is a great treatment, and yes frontline ect suck!!
I recommend Trifexis. You have to get it from the vet, or take your pet to a Care-A-Van. We go to Care-A-Van because it's so much cheaper and it works amazingly well!
We use Nexgard. But we get it from the vet. Seems to work great. The one time we got fleas ( before the nexgard). We treated the house with FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth. It worked wonders and is chemical free! There are specific ways to use it ( you can't inhale it- that's a biggie)! Good luck. I am now paranoid about fleasBaxter dealing with it once. Sorry you have to deal with this. Timing is horrible I am sure!
