Weird noise from baby, scared.

I was giving 6 week old baby a bath tonight and he started making a scary raspy gasp. He did it several times until I frantically picked him up and ran to get daddy. He did it one more time after getting out of bath and stopped. When he did it, he looked calm and seemed to be breathing fine. He has been smiling today, which is a first, so was he laughing and his face just didn't get the memo? He had a little drainage and used the nose plunger and sinus drops just in case. Any one else have this happen? It was a similar sound to his laughs he does in his sleep, but a little louder and just a single gasp and not a gangle of them like the giggle. Help! I love my baby, but seriously hate the stress of being a FTM.

  • I have had this happen and it's still happening- I told my doctor it sounds like rasping/grasping for air. He said it's normal at this age (sounded odd to me but he's the one who went to med school). Sorry your LO has the same thing- it scares the hell out of me every time I hear it :(

  • How old is your LO and how long it been happening? When does it happen? God, I hate being so ignorant at this motherhood thing.

  • It was around that time my little guy started sounding almost nasally and sick. I read in what to expect the first year that babies between 4-8 weeks get a "snurgle". It's a raspy sound (my LO sounded like he had tons of phlegm and was trying to clear his throat). If he can breathe through his nose then it's not a cold. The book reassured me but I still took his temp (normal) and suctioned his nose and monitored diapers (all normal). I still called my doctor and she said nothing sounded strange. I know, I hate the stress but you take each moment as it comes!!
  • ...his face didn't get the memo... =))

Mine does that sometimes, too. I don't know anything about it, except it's temporarily, so I always hope that he's okay.
  • It's funny you should post this.! I woke up to my 8 week old doing this in her sleep. I could tell she was breathing so I didn't wake her but stared at her and she woke up and was still acting odd when I picked her up so I suctioned her nose just in case but everything was fine. Very weird
  • Yes, my DS will suddenly make a gaspy noise a couple times a day as though something is blocking his breathing, and then immediately go back to breathing normally. Especially in his sleep. They make lots of weird breathing noises at this age. I wouldn't worry if LO doesn't appear distressed but never be embarrassed to call the pediatrician about these things. Better to be safe!
