Maternal fetal scare

So I'm 13 weeks pregnant and last week my obgyn said everything was perfect blood work was excellent and my ultrasound was clear. My child was kicking and waving and perfect today. Now my maternal fetal specialist says get an abortion! She says fluid is building up around the baby that wasn't there last week. Also my baby's at risk for structural damage? I'm doing nothing different I'm eating healthy sleeping plenty. We're going into Boston for a second opinion. But it seems all the maternal fetal specialist is doing is pushing to terminate my baby. And suggestions?

Re: Maternal fetal scare

  • I feel like a lot of dr can be alarmist. Don't give up! It may turn out fine

I am sorry you are going through this. W/my last pregnancy, my MFM was doom and gloom and OB was always very pleased w/everything. I think it is smart to get a 2nd opinion and I also suggest following up w/OB to get their perspective on what MFM mentioned. Hope you get some clarity and answers soon.

I thought they can drain the fluid if too much develops. Kind of like what they do for an amnio....
  • I asked so many different questions and all this women said was there's nothing we can do except abort your child. She wasn't sympathetic at all. She barely looked at the ultrasound except for a 2 second glance
  • What kind of fluid? Depending on the location it can indicate chromosomal abnormalities. Have you had any testing done?

I feel like we're missing part of the story here.

She looked at the ultrasound for 2 seconds, said abort, and then you left?

Edited to add: I would seek a second opinion regardless. Just having a hard time picturing how this interaction took place.
  • She didn't say the type of fluid. It was around my baby's belly she said. I am having a test next week to check on chromosomal abnormalities. I assure you that's that whole story. We ask several questions before we left after she took a peek at the ultrasound.
  • I'm not your doctor, but if she said fluid IN the abdomen she may have been talking about hydrops fetalis. Either way, she sounds like a terribly insensitive doctor and I would find a new one ASAP. T&P for you and baby.
  • Praying for you!!!!
  • I'm so sorry, that's so upsetting and for a doctor to be so unsympathetic is freaking heartless. Sounds like your instincts are right to get a 2nd opinion. I hope you get better news there.
  • This is shocking, to leave you so uninformed and suggest abortion like it's whatever. Please keep us updated.
