Postpartum swelling

Hi everyone. So I'm 5 days post c section and I'm having a long list of complications that I don't remember having with my first and I'm wondering if anyone else is in the same boat. The biggest issue is the swelling. I think I'm actually more swollen now then I was when I was pregnant. My feet are so swollen that they are numb and tingly. I sit with them elevated, I constantly hydrate and nothing helps. My legs are so swollen I can't even pull my underwear on that I literally wore three days before giving birth. My stomach and lower abdomen are poufy and swollen, almost saggy which I know I did not have after my first c and my fingers are all numb and swollen. Dr seems to think its because of IV fluid, but he inexplicably scheduled me for a two week check up before the 6 week. Anyone else going through this? Any suggestions for some relief?

Re: Postpartum swelling

  • Yes! I had this! I had a c section too. The only thing you can do I drink lots if water and pee it out. Walking helps too. My 3 yr old asked why my belly was still so big with the baby not in there.

  • I have this too. I had ankle & calf swelling before birth but it went nuts after birth...also got massive swelling in my thighs, butt, lower back and my abdomen looks like people on My 600-lb Life. Dr said it was a combination of IV fluids plus "amniotic fluid that's shifted around into tissues"...drinking and peeing helped, 12 days postpartum and most of the thigh/butt/back swelling is better but feet are still swollen. Would like to think my stomach is also swollen but I think it could just be fat :(
  • I had this with my first c section. It went away on its own. My whole right leg was so swollen I could barely bend it. I just drinking and tried to stay active. :)
  • I don't think it's just a c-section thing, I think it's a birth thing. I had a natural birth, and they warned me in the hospital that I would have some swelling afterwards - they said it was caused by the fluids in my body redistributing (which made sense to me, seeing as you have 20% more blood in your system while pregnant, etc., and all that needs to suddenly find a new home and then exit the body). I had zero swelling or bloating while pregnant mind you - and sure enough, my ankles and feet were noticeably swollen the next day. It only took a few days to go back down to normal though. And I definitely peed a lot more than normal for several days after birth - I think all the fluids bloating me were thusly eliminated by my system. So hang in there - it should likely go away soon!
  • Same same same, swelling is way worse than during pregnancy! Here's to hoping water and walking helps!
  • I am 10 days post c-section and am still very swollen, worse than when I was pregnant.  It didn't come on until my last day in the hospital.  I actually had to call my fiance to bring me something else to wear home because my pants wouldn't fit!

I had an eight pound baby but still weighed the same when I got home as I did when I went into the hospital.  I was swollen from my feet to my hips and lower back. Now it is mostly just my legs and feet.  I still can't put shoes on.  It sucks and I hate it, but I gotta think it will subside hopefully soon.

    Good luck!

Congrats! Hopefully your recovery gets better...one big suggestion I have is to keep moving, try to go for a walk ( even surface to put less strain on your abdomen). This will help pump fluids back to upper body and also try to elevate your feet while sitting ( as much as you can).

Of course, follow your OB's advise if you're in too much pain or signs of infection at then surgical site.

    Good luck!
  • Yup I had it too. It goes away. I was waaay more swollen after my c section than during pregnancy. I had 6 bags of fluid pumped into me don't had to be that. Walking was my biggest relief. I went hiking and the next day I could tell a huge difference in my swelling. Lots of water, walking and time.
