July 2015 Moms

Just curious!

so today's my due date! And no baby! Went in to get monitored today and am having steady contractions but they are weak and nothing special... I called my mom to update her and she started talking induction methods...

She informed me that with my older brother she took castor oil and orange juice and it worked in less than 24 hours. She totally decided that was a good idea for me and was all about me going to get it and do it.. Ha. Ha. I do know that castor oil is totally not recommended and I have no intention of listening to her 'advice' but i started looking online and it seems like a lot of women do use this technique...

Before you post a paragraph lecture about the negative effects of castor oil; I am aware so PLEASE DONT. I have no intention of using castor oil I am just curious about the women who may have tried it in the past, know someone who have tried it or have tried it and failed!

Re: Just curious!

  • My 16 year old neighbor is the only person I've ever known that used this method. Her Grandma gave it to her on her due date and we went for a walk around the block about an hour later and got chased by two huge rottweiler (lol) but she went into labor that night. Can't say what did it, the caster oil or the desire not to be eaten but she wasn't having contractions before that.

  • My midwife said that in her opinion it actually does work but that it totally isn't worth it. She said most patients she sees who have done it may go into labor but they have severe vomiting and diarrhea, which is the last thing you want during labor!

Have you thought about evening primrose oil and/or raspberry leaf tea? I don't think this actually induces per se but some say it helps make your cervix favorable if nothing else. And even if it does nothing it doesn't have the negative side effects of the caster oil.
  • My mom swears by it.
She took it for my brother and I and was in labour hours later for both (two days early).
Other than her story all I've ever heard is that you don't want to go far from a bathroom after you've taken it ahah
  • My midwife days to drink 3 large mason jars of raspberry leaf tea a day to help prep your cervix and when you go into labor, drink tons of it with a lot of homey mixed in, which helps you keep your energy level up!
  • *says, honey. Apparently I can't type.
  • I did it with my first after my doctor recommended it. I had severe PUPPS and was miserable! Drank it around 4ish and my water broke around 10. Not doing it this time around as I have a scheduled date and no PUPPS.
  • @Savanna111911 like I said I'm not planning on taking it I'm just curious about others stories. and yes I've been taking primrose evening oil and rrtl. Thanks!
  • I seen a video on YouTube ; the lady was went over her due date and decided to try castor oil and she went into labor that same night. She didn't have diarrhea and/vomit... And her baby was perfectly healthy..
I am 40 weeks today but I'm so scared to try CO because of all the negative feedback...
  • @Numajawara me too!!! I've been watching videos/reading threads about it this evening. I definitely don't have enough guts! With my luck I'd have baby drop meconium in my uterus! Haha
  • Cousin did just 2 weeks ago! She was beyond ready since her mom had been visiting and wanted her to be able to experience her first grandbaby. She drank it and had diarrhea all day... then she texted me at midnight saying her water broke. I think it's incredible and could just be a coincidence but it seemed to work for her. Me on the other hand will not be trying it like you said. I don't want to be in labor and uncomfortable all while having uncontrollable bowel movements :-S not worth it to me lol.

But I hadn't heard of the raspberry leaf tea and I think I'm going to head to the store now and see of that helps :) I'm not dilated and cervix is locked up tight so maybe I'll see some progress!
