Feeding baby

so my daughter was born 3 weeks early, she started on formula, and I decided to breast feed. I did for a little over a week and she lost a pound that week, started supplementing and one breast just stopped producing. I started feeding straight formula.
Anyways.. She was eating 3oz every 3 hours and now acts like she's still hungry after, then 2 hours later just cries and eats her hand and anything else near her face. (Yes I try giving her a binkie to see if it's just the suckle effect, and after trying to eat it she spits it out and cries.. My baby is hungry! She was 6.12 at birth. She did gain all she lost and a few ounces. Now weighs 7.2 her sisters were big babies (9.8 and 9.10) so feeding them was different. I was told to feed them what they wanted. But with my tiny baby, I feel like she shouldn't want to eat that much... And I'm a bad parent if I let her.. But I'm not going to make her go hungry! She don't spit up.. At all! I think she has had a little white drool maybe 6 times since birth.
But the past two days she's had a lot of loose stools. I worry a lot so I'm concerned (she has a doc app tomorrow)

Anyways, what is everyone's newbies eating? Do you feed when hungry, or have them on a schedule?

Re: Feeding baby

  • My baby was born 3 weeks early as well and had to be formula fed and now has breast milk and formula mixed in at night time. He too over the last week has started eating 3oz every 2-3 hours or so and I just feed him. My doc said there is no limit on breast milk but if they start spitting up then they are full. If he's eating that much and isn't spitting up then keep feeding him mamma. You are doing the right thing!

  • I also don't have him on a schedule I just feed him when he does his sign of hunger which just happens to be every 3 hours or so
  • Yea when I was breast feeding her I just fed her whenever she wanted. And that's the same thing my doc told me. But with formula only to give her 2 to 3 ounces.. I decided to up her a half ounce cause she's obviously hungry. I guess because she's so much smaller then my older two in afraid I will over feed her. Lol
  • You're doing fine. I'd let her eat. Could be a little growth spurt or her catching up to being early.
  • As long as they're not spitting it up just keep feeding them! DD drinks 4-5 oz formula every 3-4 hours. She's 10 days old but over 9lbs.
  • I'm pumping and we are supplementing with formula. We don't have her on a schedule we just alternate between breastmilk and formula and let her eat when she's hungry. I feel that if the baby is hungry then feed 'em! You're doing just fine!

  • I feed on demand and breastfeeding. Sometimes he gets too full I think because he spits up on occasion but usually he stops before that luckily
  • Just let her eat. Hands to mouth or turning her heading rooting is a naturally way of telling us that they are hungry. My lactation consultant said that if they get to the crying stage that you've waited too long to feed them. Just look for the signs and feed on demand. As long as the doctor says she's at a healthy weight and gaining appropriately I don't see an issue :) keep doing your best momma.
