Still sore nipples

So my baby is4 weeks old and I'm still experiencing extreme pain from nursing. No infections or anything funky that I can tell. My right one is so bad it hurts while I sleep, shower, dress, everything! By now they should be tough and feeding should be enjoyable. I try different positions each feeding, I work to get as much nipple in her mouth as possible (not just the tip) and I feel I've tried everything. Lanolin doesn't even really sooth. Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone else dealt with this? Thanks!

Re: Still sore nipples

  • Me as well which is how we got diagnosed with tongue tie. Ask your pediatrician.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. Good for you for sticking to it!

Do you have blisters? Holy jamoley, I had crazy bursts at first and I didn't even notice them until someone suggested that as a source of my pain. Bug was still so little, his latch was shallow for awhile until he grew a bit.

I second the tongue tie suggestion. Also, let your notes air dry before putting pads our a bras back on them if they are getting cracked. I also ordered coconut oil to lanolin when my nipples were cracked.

  • Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter helped my sore nipples much more than Lanolin. Also keeping dry pads on and air drying nipples. I heard moisture is very damaging to nipples. I'm 6 weeks now and notice a big improvement after week 4 so good luck!

Totally understand your pain! It took me a good 9 weeks before mine had stopped cracking and bleeding - and I'm so glad I persevered, but it was one of the hardest things I've done (worse than birth without pain meds!). Time and Jelonet gauze were what helped me. Also getting a lactation consultant to check my latch - the layed-back position was a break through for me (check YouTube videos if you haven't tried it). He is 3 months now and I actually really enjoy breastfeeding him. Good luck, it's worth sticking it out if you decide to.
  • With my DD I was in pain2 months or so, with my DS I was in pain until past 6 mos. Lactation Consultants, OBGYN and Pedi said everything looked fine - good latch, no tongue tie, no thrush. I suppose I am sensitive and DS was a "barracuda" as they say. Ointments didn't work. Maybe I should have tried ice. I don't know. It did pass. I am glad my 1st experience was reasonable so that I made it through the 2nd. I envy those women for whom BF is not shooting-pains-between-the-eyes experience.

  • I was sore for a solid six weeks. Eight weeks now and much better. I used lanolin and made sure my nipples were as dry as could be after a feeding before putting bra back over them. Dried with hairdryer after shower as my doc told me. I also am now realizing that some pain I was feeling was related to let down and not sore nipples.
