Choking on saliva?

LO has recently started drooling more. Usually it's fine but every once and awhile he coughs in a choking kind of way on it when he's laying down. It only lasts a second or two and he seems to manage fine on his own but i always grab him and hold him upright quickly just in case. It's really freaking me out...is this happening to anyone else?

Re: Choking on saliva?

  • My boy just started doing this. I'm not too concerned though. He doesn't cough when feeding so I don't attribute it to an issue with swallowing. I think the saliva just builds in his mouth and it surprises him when it starts to pass into his throat. He knows to swallow when feeding, so I think he's just learning to manage his saliva with this sudden increase in droll. A cough is good. It means he has a good reflex to protect his airway. I just assume he'll grow out of it, but would still like to hear from other mamas who've maybe passed through this phase already.

I didn't think of it that way. That makes me feel a little better!
  • Definitely noticing that with DD too!
