Morning sickness and social situations

Hi everyone!  I've been a lurker for the past few weeks but I had to un-lurk myself because I have a dilemma that I'm sure many of you share.

I'm almost at 7 weeks and this is my first pregnancy.  MS showed up this week and I basically haven't been able to eat anything.  My diet consists of pasta, pretzels and apple juice
@-) which is sad because I love food!

But I have 2 situations coming up where it just won't work:

1. We have a family dinner coming up this weekend, everyone will be there and they will definitely notice if I'm not eating anything!  I'm sure everyone will know!
2. I'm hoping to start a new job soon, and where I live the custom is that the employer pays for lunch so there is no excuse for not going out (eating healthy can be a challenge but you can always order a salad or something) and I just can't imagine what I could possibly order when eating out.  I don't want them to think that I'm weird, or worse, pregnant!

DH says just say you ate something bad and don't feel well, but I don't believe anyone would buy that...

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?  Any good ideas of what to eat (or order)?  Or good lines that saved the day?

Re: Morning sickness and social situations

  • For the family dinner is it potluck style? Can you offer to bring something that you can eat and then just push the other items around on your plate to make it look like you ate it?

If the new employer offers for you to pick the restaurant you could be in the clear .. you can direct yourself to a place where you can find something to eat, or ask if there is a restaurant near the office that offers a cuisine that you can tolerate (in a nonchelant way) ... most people will pick up on the hint and offer a place with the same palate in consideration.

  • For the family dinner I'd just put a little on my plate and kind of push it around. For the new job, you might ask the waiter if the can give you some buttered noodles, bread, or applesauce. Unless it's some exotic or international cuisine, there's probably something you can stomach.

If all else fails and you're willing to flat out lie you could just say you're having some tests or bloodwork done and aren't supposed to eat right now.

  • I was in the same situation last week. We had a large family meal and 90% of the foods turned my stomach. I put a few inoffensive foods on my plate and then just ate the ones I new I could tolerate. It was the passing up alcohol I had the most trouble with, but you could always say you have a headache and don't want to make it worse.
  • My MS started at 5 weeks and I am now almost 8 with MS all day long. My MS has been fluctuating and almost everyday I add something else I can tolerate. So hopefully you will feel a little better as your body starts to adjust to the hormones and you can add back in foods. I still have to stay away from fried foods and lots of sugar. I also had a family event for the 4th of July and there were so many people there that no one noticed my picky eating. Just make sure you eat a little something before you go incase there is nothing that works for you. You might change by the time you start your new job so just take one day at a time.
  • Thanks everyone! I was actually feeling a little better on Friday and Saturday so that worked out. Now I'm nauseous again
  • But I noticed that I'm consciously avoiding going out as much as I can to avoid blowing my cover... is anyone else doing that?
  • You could always say that you have some food intolerance or allergies. Or that you just don't eat certain types of food by choice.

Granted that does not work at a family dinner or with friends, but for coworkers it can works well.
