Breast pump to hospital

Anyone else thinking of brining their pump with them? I know milk doesn't come in necessarily for a few days...just wondering. And it's 4:30 am so I have lots of time...

Re: Breast pump to hospital

  • Both of my previous deliveries they already had a hospital grade pump in the room if you needed it.

  • I won't bring mine.  I wasn't producing milk until after I left the hospital last time.  And when I did start pumping right away, it was only to relieve the engorgement/discomfort some.

  • I'm going to bring mine because my lo will most likely go right to the NICU and I'll need to pump immediately I guess... I'm a ftm so I'm hoping if I have mine the nurses/ lactation consultant can make sure I'm using it properly.
  • If you need your pump while in the hospital they should provide you with one. My first was unexpectedly sent straight to the NICU and they provided me with a pump in my room and in her room. It was the Medela Symphony which uses the same parts as the Medela PISA, if that's the case for you, you'll end up with a full set of parts from the hospital you get to keep and can use at home.
  • Most likely you won't be pumping in the hospital, unless you have a NICU baby or there's some other complication or issue. If by chance you do have to pump in the hospital they should have one for you to use.

They have really great pumps at the hospital. Bringing yours will just be a extra thing you bring that you will not need
  • Thanks everyone - this was great advice. Have a great day.
  • No. Don't take it definitely not necessary as already suggested. You really don't need much beside personal essentials. You are in the hospital, they will provide all that you need.
  • I know there is a hospital grade pump in all of the mother baby suites in my hospital.
  • With all of my births they provide one for you to use at the hospital so I wouldn't bring one :)
  • They should have one there already.  Make sure you bring the parts home with you to have otherwise, they just get thrown away.

  • I'll be taking mine. My hospital gives you tons of accessories to take with you and I want to match them with my pump. Did this with my fist and it worked perfectly-I didn't have to buy any extra accessories.

  • Leave it at home. As PP have said.. the hospital grade pump is awesome.. if its needed and you get to take home all the parts which work with Medela PISA.

  • I plan on bringing mine. It was recommended during my hospital tour. Yes the hospital provides one but it's not the same as yours. I personally would rather get comfortable with the pump I'll be using on a daily basis, over using the hospital's pump then transitioning to mine.
  • I'm thinking of taking it just so the LC can show me how to use it correctly and fit my flanges correctly. Ftm so not sure what I'm doing.

  • I brought mine, but ended up using the hospital grade 1. My milk started coming in in 2 days thanks to that pump being so strong!
  • I'll be taking mine so I can pump in the comfort of my room if necessary. I had to go into the hospital nursery to use their pump and the fluorescent lights were a bit brutal in the middle of the night. I also couldn't get baby to latch right away so I was pumping colostrum then milk and syringe feeding her. Mine doesn't take up much bag space.

Though this time I'm expecting BFing to be easier (??) so I probably won't need it!

When my first was admitted to the nicu, I had my husband run home and get mine.
The hospital had one for me to use but it was nice that the LC's could show me how to work mine and make sure everything fit so I would know what to do at home. And as other people mentioned, I got some free spare parts.

    On a side note-
I would recommend using a hospital grade pump to pump in the beginning if it's offered to you. For whatever, its MUCH harder to pump colostrum than milk and a hospital grade pump will be more effective.
