High-Risk Pregnancy

Pregnant with Fibroids

I have a uterine fibroid and was going to have it removed but in pre op they did pg test and found I am pregnant, this will be my 3rd pg and with no success so far, I am worried that the fibroid will increase my risk. Has anyone been pregnant with fibroids and had a perfectly fine pregnancy? Any tips you have on getting through this?

Re: Pregnant with Fibroids

  • I was told I have 2 uterine fibroids when I had my pregnancy confirmed. I had no idea I had fibroids until the ultrasound. They are both under 3cm and so far aren't giving me any problems. I am being monitored more closely and considered high risk because fibroids put you at risk for preterm labor, c-sections, etc. I see both an OB and perinatal specialist monthly and have ultrasounds monthly. So far so good. They usually grow during 1st trimester which can cause pain but mine haven't. Im a FTM abd tbis is my first pregnancy. I am now 15 weeks. Best of luck to you!

I had 3-4 fibroids at the beginning of pregnancy. Nothing was done about them and I'm currently 26 weeks with a healthy baby! I think it just all depends on the sizes.

  • I am at 20 weeks and have 5 fibroids. One is growing rapidly. Currently 9cm. I am also high risk due to AMA (42) and RA. I see a fetal maternal Dr and they are going to continue monthly US and eventually non stress fetal monitoring . At this.point baby girl is of normal size and not being constricted. So it's a wait and see game. They may just move out of the way, the large one might outgrow it's blood supply and die, painfully but not risky to baby. If it starts to cause restriction I will prob be induced early. Large fibroids can cause bleeding and difficulty with the uterus after delivery. I feel informed and am trying very hard to not.worry about the unknowns. But the Dr said there is no reason. I won't still have a healthy pregnancy and baby. At my age and pregnant with my first I am just taking it as part of the territory. It's been a long wait and she will be worth it! Best of luck to all of u!
  • I also have fibroids, about 5. The largest being about 4 cm. My doctor isn't at all concerned, it really is about where they are located and the size. Mine are in the outer uterine wall, not affecting baby. 20 weeks along now.

  • I have quite a few fibroids - largest is 8cm, next largest is 4cm and the others are much smaller.  None grew during my pregnancy with DD (I have a healthy 2.5yo) and they are also fine this pregnancy (20w).

I have had two losses, and they may have been due to implantation problems caused by the fibroids.  But, if your fibroids aren't growing and you are out of the first trimester, they are unlikely to cause any problems with the pregnancy.  I didn't know I had them until my dating u/s with DD, and the doctors weren't at all concerned.  They told me worst case that I might need a c-section if one obstructed the cervix, but I ended up having an uneventful vaginal birth.

  • I have one fibroid that measures 14 centimeters. It is inside my uterus, right above my cervix. It has caused a few issues. 1) I have to have a c section and the c section will be a higher up, vertical incision. 2) the baby can't drop, so she is still transverse at 36 weeks. 3) I am on bed rest after a three day hospital stay for false labor. 4) I am at risk for the c section turning into a hysterectomy as well.

That being said, all I care about is my little girl coming out healthy. She is measuring in the 50th percentile for size and isn't really affected by the fibroid. From what I read, many pregnant women have fibroids and have no issues. It depends on the size and location. I wish you the best of luck and an easy, uneventful pregnancy!
  • Hi ladies. I started my pregnancy with 3 small fibroids (all under 3 cms) .Around 18 weeks one of my fibroids grew to 9 cm which caused contractions and my cervix to drop to 2,3cm , I had severe pain and was hospitalised for 5 days. Fortunately baby girl is fine(currently 22 weeks) but I've been put on bed rest until I deliver . It's not easy as I constantly have to depend on others to drive me around or do things for me. Plus Im living with my in laws and im not close to my mother in law . Hang in there . Just get bed rest and keep positive.
