Views on castor oil?

hello everyone. Hope all is well and you are all thriving.

38+3 with baby number 2

Now I'm not one to be impatient or feel the need to 'hurry things up' in a sense but I am very curious as to what your views are on Castor oil and if any of you have tried this method? Also, is it worth it? Or does it just make a mess and leave you feeling poorly with no end result other than a sore bottom and sickness?
Maybe other safer remedies worked for you?

I can't wait to hear your views :)

Re: Views on castor oil?

  • If you like the runs sure go for it. Nothing will work if baby is not ready.

  • Very true, I've just read for some people it works and some it's left them in a very bad way. Is that what happened to you or someone you know then? x
  • I tried with my first but not until 41wks. I won't do it before your due date. It didn't work. It didn't give me diarrhea either.

  • I did it with my last one and will not do it again yes it gave me the runs and started labor but also made my baby have his first poop inside. And also I went from 47 minutes of labor with my baby before to 15 hours with him and the runs continued as he came out not fun
  • It's also know to cause placental abruption. It can make your contractions much more forceful and separate the placenta from the wall of the uterus. Like anything it comes with risks but many have successfully used it too. I have used it for constipation when I was younger, it wasn't pleasant. I wouldn't want to go through that and labor.
  • Oh dear, it doesn't sound very safe at all. Thank you for your views girls xx
  • I don't know anyone who has tried it. Have read about it in natural birth books. I think I would try it if I was a week past my due date. Seems more natural to me than hospital induction. I haven't heard much risk associated with it other than needing to stick close to the restroom. But, honestly I really only feel comfortable because my SO is a physician and would be able to safely monitor me prior to getting to L&D
  • No.  Don't do it.
  • My friend used castor oil around 38.5 weeks. She said it caused a lot of diarrhea and discomfort...but it did put her in labour and she had her baby within 48 hours of taking it. Obviously, it's hard to know if it was the castor oil or if the baby would have come then regardless.
  • I have never personally tried this, but have had a few friends try this once they were well past their due dates. One swears by it, even though it gives her the horrible runs. And the other, it didn't work, just gave her the runs too.
Even if I were to pass my due date, I don't think I can even stand the thought of having diarrhea during labor!! Yikes!

  • I wouldn't do it . Read it just gives you discomfort if anything . My friend at raspberry's before her due date && went into labor shortly after . Worth a try !

I used caster oil with my first 2 as soon as my doctor told me that I was effaced and dilated. I went into labor within 12 hours, had my first 2 weeks early and my second 4 weeks early. Not too much discomfort or diarrhea, and it stops once you go into labor. Just make sure you chug enough of it, several ounces (hold your nose) it's so gross, but so worth it. Going to use it with my 3rd...
  • I didn't try anything. In my opinion all these are waste to try if baby is not ready to come out.

All of this.  Is it really worth it if your kid lands in the NICU later?  Don't do it.  The bad stories Ive heard far outweigh the good ones.  By a landslide.  Don't do it.
  • Is there any difference between castor oil and primrose oil at all?
  • Don't do it!

  • Is there any difference between castor oil and primrose oil at all?

Um, yes. Two different oils, dear.

    @rachelhannan :
Ricinus communis (Castor Plant) & Oenothera biennis (Evening Primrose).

They serve two entirely different purposes.

The castor oil is really just to produce an inflammatory response that will cause labor from the stress on the body. Not ideal.

The Evening Primrose Oil is used to encourage the cervix to thin. Taken vaginally it can help if your baby's head is already engaged with your pelvis to smoosh down to create progression.

I would really really look to educate yourself before popping random herbal medications blindly.

You aren't even full term yet-- if you make it to 40 weeks then worry about all this. Slow your roll...

  • My mom says she took it with my sister. She says it jump started her labor the very next day (a week and some days early), but labor went on for a really really long time. Baby did not want to come out. And when she did she was small, jauntised and screamed bloody murder for the first 6 months of her life. My mom jokes she took her out of the oven too soon.who knows if that is really what caused it though.
  • I would suggest looking into evening primrose oil capsules. A lot of doctors recommend them, but not until after 36 or 37 weeks I believe.
  • I was just curious that's all, I'm not in a hurry to meet baby number 2. Being full term 40 weeks a few of the mummies I know have mentioned about the two oils so I was just asking the group for their individual opinions as it's comforting to know how it effects some people that's all. X

This just makes me sad. And to think, you will have 3 children and you are making horrible decisions like this.

Would it have been so bad to wait for your LO ones to come when they where ready? Or at least wait until your EDD to do this?
Why were you in such a rush?
