Rear ended 30mph 16w pregnant

I'm partially venting and partially seeing if anyone else has been through the same thing and everything turned out okay. I'm 16 weeks pregnant, had just left my doctors appointment ironically and was on my way to pick up DH when some dumb lady was texting and smashed into the back of my car while I was completely stopped going over 30mph!! I immediately called 911 and they sent police and asked if I was having pains. I wasn't and I do feel okay. I called the on call Dr from my office and he said to just come in tomorrow to hear the heartbeat. I did get a pretty big jolt from being hit that hard. Has anyone else had this happen while pregnant? Did everything turn out well? Was baby okay? Even though I feel okay I'm still worried. And I'm very angry that people can be so selfish to text and drive and potentially hurt another person and their unborn child.

  • There was a girl in N15 who had this happen, but I can't remember what week.  She ended up being fine, although I can't say how fast the other driver was going when she was hit.  Sorry that's not much info but hopefully makes you feel a teeny bit better.

  • Baby is well protected.
  • The same thing happened to me at around 14 weeks. My doc assured me the baby was well protected in there. Even the firemen (yes, I made the cops call the firemen over to see if I needed to be taken to the hospital) said the same and that they've been called to a scene where a more heavily pregnant woman was dragged by a horse and she and baby we're just fine! Good to go in for a little listen of the heartbeat for the peace of mind :).
  • If they were truly going 30mph I would be worried about how you are. That speed can cause serious long term injuries, not just typical sore for a few weeks-months whiplash.

Yes. I got run into around 20 weeks at a stop light. Everything worked out fine for me, but I don't feel it's right to placate you with "everything will be fine." All you can do is drink water & be mindful until your appointment. I hope you get good news & your worrying is for naught. Hang in there.

  • I see this a LOT in my field. Don't worry, your baby is safe if you were belted in with a 3 point harness resting across your pelvis. There would have been a wash of adrenaline and cortisol after you realized what had happened and the effects of that stress would have stayed on for a brief time. But that's about it. So glad you were do "lucky" all things considered. Apologies that you met a douchebag driver in the worst way possible.

Hi. I've actually been in two car accidents with my first two children. With my first I was 7 months pregnant. I went straight to the hospital because I did feel light cramps which ended up being contractions. They gave me a shot to stop the contractions and I was sent home. My son was born over EDD and healthy. With my second I was 6 months pregnant and rushed to the ER. Only because I didn't know if I would start having contractions like my first. But everything was actually fine. But I was happy to be able to see baby on the ultrasound etc. My daughter was born healthy as well. Hope you're ok.

I'm sure everything is fine :) Lots of women seem to know about it or have been through it so that's really reassuring. I took a seriously hardcore tumble before i knew i was pregnant (about 3 weeks in - most delicate time, right?) I fell wall climbing and while i was harnessed, i somehow managed to slam into the wall lower down, abs first. That night we all got drunk :)

    And here i am today.

I'm still furious on your behalf though. People who text and drive are morons and morons should not be allowed to pilot a ton of high-speed steel.
  • Last pregnancy my car was totalled in an accident at 16 weeks. All was fine. I agree watch for cramping, bleeding etc.
  • my mother in law and i were at a red light. this man drove his minivan into our car going 40/45. i was only 7 weeks. everyhing so far has been fine for me. week 22.
