Glad I haven't had my cervix checked

I am 37 weeks & 5 days & have not had my cervix checked yet & I am kind of glad. My doc told me it's not a reliable indicator of anything and it seems so many other women are fixated on how many centimeters dialed they are & for how many weeks etc. As if I am not already anxious enough I dont need to fixate on centimeters!

Re: Glad I haven't had my cervix checked

  • I'm a few days behind you - 37 Weeks + 3 days and I had mine checked a few days ago.  I was able to tell that my LO was in the proper position, BUT I was having a ton of pressure and pain in my pelvis, so I thought for sure that I was dilating.  WRONG!  Not dilated at all, but my cervix is thinning out - all good news.  I have an appointment week after next and I assume they'll check me again - I'm a bit obsessive though.  I just want to know that I'm making progress in the right direction. :)

  • I'm 37 weeks and haven't been checked either. Sometimes I'm glad, and sometimes I'm curious. I've been having tons of pelvic pressure, like @NSAnderson0313 and that makes me wonder if I'm thinning out as well. I guess in the long haul it doesn't matter because baby won't come until she's ready.

  • Im 38 and 2 havent been checked yet either and probably wont be until labor starts.
  • It must be an American thing. I could be wrong but I haven't been checked once. Docs aren't all that concerned or interested in the cervix. I'm 37 + 3.

  • Being checked isn't a big deal or very informational unless you are experiencing contractions or are facing an induction.
If I hadn't been checked last week, I wouldn't have know at L&D that it was in fact preterm labor. As I was dilating from them. But I had been having the occasional contraction for several days before the original check.

  • @Kate08Young - that's what I thought. Totally just realised I have been checked twice once when I was 18 weeks and another when I was 28 weeks both because of the threat of preterm labour.

As far as I know things can change in an instant and the only real indication of labour ...is labour.

Very true, just saying that it can serve an important part in the type of experience/treatment you receive. Yet it typically isn't an indicator of anything.

I've been checked 2x, no progress. I have a RCS on July 23 and would like to keep her in until than, so I was happy with the news.

  • I started getting checked at 38 weeks and it's true I have been completely fixated on the fact that I'm 41 weeks and not dilated. It's consumed my damn thoughts. :( hold out on finding out as long as u can! lol that's what I say
  • I've been checked twice. My baby is breech and they just wanted to make sure I wasn't walking around 4 cm dilated with a breech baby. They don't want to risk me going into labor with him breech. I haven't had any changes as of last time they checked, but it has been a while. I have an appointment tomorrow but I'm not sure if they will check. They do not check as a standard unless you are feeling regular contractions, or you simply request it.

Either way my surgery is this week and I'm so excited!
  • I wish I never got checked! 2cm from 34 weeks... Being told I'll go early because of it. 39 weeks and no movement since!
  • Glad I got mine checked....I was 5cm at 38 weeks and having contractions on the NST that I didn't feel. I had my baby about 12 hours later.

@shmarpler , this is me... I'm glad I haven't been checked but am totally curious because of all the "activity" going on lately (more back pain, more pelvic pressure, more BH/contractions at night, nausea at night...). I have my 38 week appt on Tuesday so i guess I'll see how I feel that day.

Whoops, I lied, I WAS checked back when I was 32 weeks due to preterm labor symptoms... But she couldn't even get her fingers high enough to even feel my damn cervix, lol.

  • My doctor checked when I had my strep test at 36 weeks and I wasn't dilated at all. It was super disappointing to hear that all of my BH contractions had been completely pointless. At my next appointment I just opted not to be checked until it was necessary (39 weeks for my doctor). I figure nothing good can really come of it. If I'm not make progress, I'll be disappointed. If I am making progress, I'll possibly be getting my hopes up for labor to come soon.
  • I got checked at 36 weeks and I was barely a 1. At my 37 and 38 week appointments my doctor asked if I wanted to be checked again and I said don't bother since I have no other signs of labor. 39 weeks tomorrow and baby still seems pretty comfy in there so it probably would have been frustrating to hear I'm at 3 cm or something and yet still have nothing going on.

  • I wasn't checked with my first two and that was fine by me.  I did ask to be checked this time because my second came so fast, i thought it might be beneficial to know what's going on down there before labor starts.  I can't say it made me feel better since last week at my 38w appointment I found out I'm 3cm & 80 effaced already but at least I know I guess.
  • Kind of annoyed I had mine checked today. 39 weeks and not even a full centimeter. Bit disappointing.

UPDATE: was curious at my 38 week appt... 1 cm and thick! HAHAHA! Wish my OB had looooong fingers, grrrr!

@+Vyxyn+ thanks for sharing! Good food for thought!!
  • Argh I caved today - 39 weeks, cervix was still posterior - I SO thought I was going to be at least a 2 or 3 cm dilated

Wish I hadn't have gotten checked
  • 39 + 1 today - about a fingertip dilated , cervix is soft , baby head is low... At least it's something but I have a very strong feeling I will be going past my due date. Always have felt that way too.
  • I'm 39 + 6 and I haven't been checked. At my midwife appointment yesterday she said to consider if I wanted to be checked if I make it to the next appointment as I'll be overdue then. She also asked me to consider whether I wanted to think about induction if I get 10-14 days overdue. Other than that I'm just supposed to sit back and wait until baby is ready!

Yup I went in for my 38 week appointment yesterday and resisted being checked hooray =D>
  • I didn't ask to be checked yesterday, but she told me when she did my membrane sweep (for the 2nd time) that I am now 3cm dilated and 75%effaced and doesn't think I will go past this weekend. We still set my induction date for July 28th just in case, seeing as I haven't had any contractions or BH. Just some mild cramping and spotting. But I kind of wish she didn't tell me because even though I know it doesn't mean anything, it still gives false hope!

39+2 today and caved at my appointment, lol. Still only at a 1 which wasn't surprising. I think my doctor expected me to be super sad or something, she kept saying reassuring things about it and I was like "It's really okay, I wasn't expecting much" haha.

Actually my husband was the sad one! As we were heading to the parking lot I noticed he was kind of quiet and he admitted he was disappointed that there wasn't much progress. I tried to explain that even if I was a little more dilated it wouldn't necessarily mean anything. Plus some women go from 0-10 in a flash, although I don't think that will be me lol. I had no idea he had his hopes up. Poor guy just wants to meet his daughter already!

  • My doctor asked if I wanted to be checked at 38 weeks and I said yes.  I was curious and wanted some encouragement for the rest of the week!  Got checked again this week and a bit more progress.  I know the doctor can't predict anything but I just find it encouraging.  I am so over being pregnant and anything helps at the moment!
