When to switch to a faster flow nipple?

Hi all! My LOs will be 3 mo on Thursday. We use Dr Brown bottles with Level 1 nipples. I am wondering what the signs are that you need to move to a faster flow nipple (ie level 2)? The general Dr Brown guidelines say 3 mo but my babies were born 6 weeks early and are a bit behind on developmental stuff. Don't want to miss the cues but I also operate under the general mantra that if it ain't broke, don't fix it! TIA!

Re: When to switch to a faster flow nipple?

  • We haven't switched either, she is like 10.5 weeks. I tried this morning the #2 nipple, because it seemed like her feedings were taking a lot longer! She kept spitting out the formula, and it was running out of her mouth! Needless to say she was not ready to move on. I would just try one and see how your little one does!

  • My DD is 9 weeks and we switched to level 2 a few weeks ago (we use both Tommee Tippee and Dr Brown bottles). However, she has some breathing difficulties which are linked to the need for an earlier move than we may have otherwise needed.

For us, the signs were her getting very frustrated at feeds and sucking incredibly hard before screaming - it was quite clear her milk wasn't coming out fast enough!
  • I changed to level 2 at like 4 weeks because it looked like the flow was too slow and frustrating her and she looked like she would just give up and sleep because it was tiring her out and she wasn't drinking much. You know if the flow is too fast if they are guzzling it and you can hear the milk just hit their stomach hard and loud

If your baby seems frustrated and wants the milk faster, it's probably time to move up. I think the age suggestions aren't accurate for everyone... My LO is almost 9 weeks and will only eat from the preemie nipples. To each their own!
  • We also use dr Browns and are still on level 1. Dr said you should see the milk on the sides of her mouth but not spilling out. Also, if feeding takes over 30 minutes for 4oz (what we give our girl) then to try the level 2

10w and still at level 1. I asked my pediatrician about this last week and she said to change once LO starts to get frustrated that it's not coming out fast enough or the nipple goes flat often during feedings.
  • Agree with all PPs... also they say if the nipples are constantly collapsing it could be a sign that they baby is working faster than the nipple and it's time to move up.

  • My LO was 6 weeks Monday and I switched him last week to the level 2 nipples, he kept sucking so hard and making the nipples go flat first couple attempts with the faster nipple was a little messy but once he realized that he didn't have to work so hard he was fine.
  • We switched today and he seems fine. He doesn't even seem to notice.

  • My DS is 11.5 weeks and we just switched today to level 3. I honestly don't feel like there is much difference in the dr browns flow levels. He still sucks just as hard on the level 3 as he did on the level 2. He handles it like there wasn't even a change. Guess we'll be moving to a sippy-type cup sooner than most.
  • I ended up switching to Level 2 last night & it seemed to work out well for my LOs. Bonus - cut feeding time by about 10 min (which pleased DH immensely as he seems to think feeding time is a race. We have twins & I caught him asking DD once before a feeding whether she was going to be his "good little racehorse" lol). Thanks ladies!
  • Update: DS aka my "lazy eater" did great & is still on Level 2 nipples. DD started out well the first couple of feedings but then projectile vomited during the next 5 consecutive feeds. I moved her back down to Level 1 and all has been good since.
