Is anyone RH Negative?

Hi there, I just found out that I am RH negative. I'm worried, and know that it should be fine with the rhogam injection. Is anyone else RH negative? There is a history of full-term stillborns on my mother's side. I'm wondering if anyone has a similar background. My doctor didn't have much time for me today after telling me that I am RH negative and I have to wait 4 weeks to ask her again. So I thought I'd ask all of you! Thank you.

Re: Is anyone RH Negative?

  • My sis is RH negative and has four happy and healthy kids with absolutely no complications.

And from what I've heard (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), it's not usually an issue for FTMs. The shot and the fact that you're a FTM should mean everything will be fine.

  • I found out with my son that I'm O negative. I got the rhogam injection before he was born but didn't end up needing the second injection because he's O negative as well. I had a miscarrage in February and ended up needing one then. I know I'll have to end up scheduling another one soon for this pregnancy. I was a little nervous as well but felt much better knowing I was getting the shot to basically protect future pregnancies.
  • Things have changed so much! I'm 35 and my mom was RH negative. I was born 2 months early. I had to have 2 blood transfusions in the womb and one after I was born.

When I told my OB about this, he hadn't even heard of that being done.

  • I'm O negative, too!  This is my first and I'll be getting the shot, as we do not know my husband's blood type.  My sister is a negative and her husband a positive, so she had to get this with all four of her healthy and happy children.  Hopefully both you and baby will be just fine!   Do they happen to know what caused the history of full term stillborns on your mother's side?  Whatever it is, that's so hard so my heart goes out to your family.
  • My mum is! Don't worry :) she had 6 babies me being number 3!
  • I'm a negative, will get a shot later on in pregnancy but other that everything normal
  • Yep I'm B- and my DD who is almost 1.5 is B+. I got preggers no problem with this one but I did have bleeding in fist tri so they gave me a Rhogam shot early on as precautionary. The shots are in your butt and they sting like a bitch!! No worries this is very common:)

  • I am A- and we have no idea what DH is because he has refused to go to the dr for almost 2 years now....men. Anyway I heard the shot is to protect you and the baby from blood being mixed of your baby is + because then the blood will start attacking the other type thinking its a virus. Then again that is the jist of what I remember from high school bio! I think it's more of a pro cautionary measure to protect you and baby. If you still have concerns definelty talk to your dr when you go back in.
  • I am.....I have a healthy 7 yr old who is A-......I got a shot at 28 weeks and another after I gave birth.....I had a Mc and received a shot then....I will get another shot at 28 weeks this time and again after giving birth....for the first child it isn't a huge risk....it's every pregnancy after that that you want to protect
  • As one pp said, it's not usually an issue with your first child. Here's a link with tons of helpful information!

I'm O-. My doctor doesn't even seem concerned. Of course I'll get the shots, but I think everything should be good :) I also know of a few ppl that have - blood types and their babies came out healthy and full term!

  • I'm A negative too. Doctor said nowadays it's no problem at all.
My gran is pretty worried nontheless because my aunt almost died at birth and had to have blood transfusions.
  • I'm B- and had to get the rhogam shot with my first because my husband is +.  And I will have to get it with my second.  I promise, it's not that bad.  I even got it in my arm instead of my butt.  Tons of people have to get the shot--being RH negative doesn't mean there is anything wrong.  I think you will get it around the start of the 3rd trimester unless the dr thinks you need it sooner.

Are you certain that the baby's dad is +?  Because if he is also RH negative, you won't have to even get the shot.  And if the baby is born with a negative blood type, you won't have to get a 2nd one after delivery.

  • I am O- . This is my 4th child.
Only one ended up having a negative.
I never had any complications with any of them.
My family has had a couple of miscarriages but I believe for different reasons.
It's not a big deal as it used to be thanks to that guy in Australia :)
  • I am RH negative as well.  Had a rhogam shot somewhere in week 20-30 and then another right after I delivered my son.  It's not a big deal.

  • I'm A- and husband is O+... With the shot there is nothing to worry about.
  • I'm O- and I'm pretty sure Hubbs is too. He sees his PCP at beginning of next month for annual physical & bloodwork. He's going to ask them to type him as well so we're sure. My OB said that I have to provide documentation of his blood type if I want to skip the rhogam shot. He could either have his blood type determined @ PCP or by Red Cross if he donated blood. Since he already has doc appt on schedule, that's the route we're going.

  • I'm O-, hubs is A+. I'll get the shot at 28 weeks and then again once baby is born (since - is a recessive trait, most likely baby will end up +). Not an issue for FTM, has to do with you developing antibodies to an Rh+ baby (if the baby is in fact + which you won't know until after it is born). You'll carry these antibodies into subsequent pregnancies which could then cause issues with your blood and the new baby's blood mixing and your body trying to attack the baby's blood, resulting in things like anemia and, more serious, possible miscarriage. Rhogam prevents your body from making and carrying the antibodies through to subsequent pregnancies, but it's not a 1 time fix. You will still need Rhogam during future pregnancies as well.

  • Ditto what all PP have said. Additionally, if you have any bleeding before the 28w shot, call your dr to get the shot early to prevent potential mixing of blood with baby.
  • Thanks everyone! My husband thinks he is AB+, but he is going to confirm that. I'm just anxiety girl and worry about every little thing! Was the spotting early in pregnancy from the baby an am I attacking it right now? But I just have to relax and look at the stats: it is not like our grandmothers' experience anymore and preventative measures are prevalent and successful. Thanks again all and happy pregnancies and healthy babies to you all!
  • Yes Rhogam is amazing! My nana was Rh neg and her kids had to have blood transfusions when born and we're pretty sickly.
As for spotting it's difficult to know what it's from, but it's very common to spot in early pregnancy.
  • I am also O- so had the first rhogam shot around 8 weeks when I had bleeding and will have another one at 28 weeks. My doctor has assured me that everything should be fine but I've had bleeding several times now so she keeps a careful eye on things. Baby is still healthy so that's all that matters!
  • I'm negative and have to get the shot I think the doctor said at 26 weeks. My understanding was that the first pregnancy typically it isn't as big deal of a deal but it would be in future ones if you don't get the treatment. I think my husband is negative too. My doctor didn't express any interest in my husbands blood type even though it looks like if we are both negative it isn't possible that LO would be positive. I do think that most hospitals will require the shot even if your blood types are compatible and it is probably because there would be a huge liability if the baby was a product of infidelity or something.

BTW I think this issue is actually why some states required blood test for a marriage license.
