High BP, Induction Tomorrow--UPDATE

The induction did not go very well. In fact, we never actually got to the induction part, just cervical ripening. A 12 hour tampon like med was inserted, followed by 3 dissolving pills that each lasted about 4 hours each. After every insertion, my cervix was checked at least once ranging from the most gentle person to the outright rough one. My cervix dilated to maybe a 2 and was still very hard. After one of the last cervix checks, I couldn't stop crying. It was incredibly painful, I was tired of being touched and examined for the last 28 or so hours and I was incredibly frustrated that my body wasn't cooperating. Not to mention, the beds were the most uncomfortable of anything I've ever laid in and all I could do was lay in it. Around midnight on night 2, the doctors informed me that my baby's heart rate was decelerating after contractions. (I was having plenty of them to no avail.) They wanted to monitor very closely for 2 more hours. At 2am, the decelerations were still happening and they startes discussing a c section. They wanted to monitor an additional 2 hours. I was terrified at the thought of a c section, insert more crying here. At 4am, the resident and several nurses came in, I knew something was up. They told me the heart rate was getting worse, they were very concerned about actual labor since she was already in so much distress and recommend a c section ASAP. They of course explained everything to me and as soon as I consented, the room was crawling with people. They all had a specific task to get ready for the surgery and they were all incredibly nice and understanding. The amount of compassion each of them showed me was amazing and helped take away a lot of fear. Within an hour, I heard my baby girl crying. I had managed to hold it together until that point but then I lost it. This time they were tears of joy. And the doctor told me the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck, twice, causing the stress. I was concerned about whether we had made the right decision until that moment, when I knew the c section was the absolute right choice. I never experienced labor. Had no option but to get a spinal block and had to deliver my baby early and via c section. None of these things was what I had hoped or planned for. But I have a beautiful and healthy baby (that is currently keeping me up constantly cluster feeding!!) and that truly is all that matters in the end. Adelene Rose was born July 17 at 5:06, weighing 6# 4oz and 19 1/4 inches long. She has a full head of hair too! I went in for a normal check up today at 36w6d and ended up being scheduled for an induction tomorrow afternoon.  : (  My blood pressure has been on the higher end of normal this whole pregnancy but today it shot up and my doctor was not happy with it.  She took blood and urine to run a bunch of tests, hooked me up to monitors (I'm having mini contractions to my surprise), and did an ultrasound.  Baby looks and sounds great.  She is in the head down position and has plenty of fluid.  But at the end of the day, my doctor wants to get her out before my blood pressure gets any higher.  She said that they used to put women on bed rest and wait it out but found that issues with mom and baby got worse as time progressed.

So sometime tomorrow afternoon I'll be admitted to the hospital for medications that help ripen the cervix.  She said this part could take 12-36 hours but I should be mostly comfortable.  Once they are happy with that progression, I start the Pitocin and the real fun begins.  It sounds like it could be a few days before baby actually arrives and I can forsee myself being bored out of my mind in that hospital bed while waiting those 12-36 hours for the cervix meds to work!

She said that babies born around 37 weeks tend to do very well and most of the time get to go home with mom right away.  She also assured me that my labor will not be rushed so that I'll be forced in to a c-section.  The hospital that I'm delivering at is one of the top 5 Baby Friendly hospitals in the country so I hope she is right!  I've gone almost 30 years without anyone seeing my insides, I could got at least another 30!

My original doctor that I loved left the practice last month and this is only my second visit with this doctor.  However, she and her nurses and lab techs made me feel like I was the only person in that clinic today.  They were seriously all about me and my comfort and making me feel at ease.  I could not be more thankful for that.

I had wanted little to no interventions.  No epidural.  And planned on her being late.  But babies have other plans and I'm just going along for the ride now.  As terrifying as that is.

  • Hang in there! Are they thinking it may be Pre-e? I will say that my cousin had that and was in bad shape, so it's nice that they are being so cautious with you. I hope everything goes perfectly and you have a sweet, healthy little bundle here soon-ish!
  • Hang in there! It's frustrating when life has other plans but it sounds like you've got a great attitude about it. Good luck!

  • With my first I went in to be induced and they started with just the stuff for my cervix and planned to start the pitocin the next morning but I was in active labor within a few hours so I never had to get the pitocin. I was farther along so that might be why but you might luck out and not have to have it either. Either way good luck and lots of t&p!

    Best of luck tomorrow :)
  • Your at the exact point this happened to me with my first. Good luck mama, you guys will do great!

Induction can be a long ride, just depends how ready your body is to respond to the meds. Even with induction you still have options. Pepper the doctors with questions and ask what your alternatives are before you accept a procedure.
  • Good luck! I'm sure it will go by fast and be great :)
  • Thank you all for your kind thoughts and encouraging words.
  • Best of luck to you! I'm in the same situation although they are having me schedule my induction tomorrow.  They too want my son out by 37 weeks due to the hypertension.  Its very unnerving but whatever it takes to have a healthy baby is what I ultimately want.  Anyways I just wanted to let you know good luck and enjoy your bundle of joy :)
  • @marieva good luck to you as well!
  • @amylianne luckily my blood work and urine tests were negative for pre e but the doctor is worried it could develop in to that the longer we wait.

@mjones0721 I can only hope it happens that quickly for me too!
  • Beautiful day for an induction! Be blessed and encouraged!!!

I was induced for low fluid, after the prostaglandin for the cervix, they said they'd check me in 12 hours for petocin but the baby was born 6 hours later. No epidural.

All depends on how your body reacts to the medications.
  • I don't know if I'm seeing this too late, but I was induced with my dd and given cervadil to soften my cervix. My water broke on its own after about 12 hours. I was still given pitocin to start contractions. I labored through all of this naturally, so you can absolutely still have your natural birth. Please pm me if you have any questions! You can do this and I can't wait to "meet" your little one!

  • Good luck!  And you're right, no matter how many plans you try to make for this kind of thing sometimes your baby and/or body have other plans.

  • @CGless and @jenandbrett Glad to hear that there are some positive induction stories! My doctor said it could all take several days, probably to give me worst case scenario.

Currently I'm waiting for them to tell me when to come in. Was supposed to be in an hour and now they're telling me to call them back in 2 hours to see if they're ready for me. Now that the decision has been made, I'm ready to get things moving along.
  • Good luck to you, sounds like you are in good hands! I'm confident that you and baby will do just fine! Sending prayers your way!
