STM+ Feeding Question

This question came up in another thread so I thought we could get the opinion of some STM+

How old was your LO when they started to feed on a schedule? Or is this some crazy idea that I've dreamed up?

And while we are at it - did your LO naturally reduce how many times they ate per day? I'm worried that I'm reading hunger cues incorrectly and over feeding DS.

Basically any insight you have to share regarding feeding schedules/amounts of feeds would be awesome to hear!!

Thanks in advance!

Re: STM+ Feeding Question

  • We never had a schedule, basically the first year was when I read the cues that my son was hungry so I would offer. Pretty much any time he cried it was that he wanted to breast feed. Once he got older and could crawl to me to get on my lap or when he could walk to me it was much easier to see when he wanted to eat. I breastfed until he was 16 months old, I started to give him cows milk when he was 1 so he wasn't at the breast for every time he wanted milk and then eventually we tapered off to breast at morning and night and he had a very easy time with the weaning, I was very lucky. :)

  • With my first I started a schedule around two months- feeding every three hours only. It was seven years ago, and back then I was very proud of myself for being on a schedule. The second time around I am doing on demand and have no desire to switch to a schedule. I guess I know how short this time really is and I am enjoying it to the fullest. With my first I really needed to feel like I had some control over my life so it worked for me then. For me there is no right or wrong way, just what works for you in the place you're at!

@Knottie76365376 how did you go about putting a two-month old on a schedule, if you don't mind me asking? it seems impossible to me!
  • DS1 was never on a schedule. I really don't see how you could be on a feeding schedule with ebf. Once ds1 started eating solids, the breastfeeding became much more predictable.

Ds1 (and ds2 is well on his way) used me for his pacifier. It's hard to know at this age if it's comfort or milk they want sometimes. Do what works for you both right now! I'd say regardless, 2 months is too young to hope for too much.

  • @marijaa333 I decided that I would breastfeed every 3 hrs, no exceptions. At the time I felt that it worked great- he started sleeping through most of the night. If he cried before it was time to eat I would distract him, rock him, walk him, etc. Like I mentioned, I am doing it differently this time around. I had less going on with my 1st. Life is different now!
  • In my experience, around 3-4 months naps become more predictable and a routine can naturally fall into place.

    This.  ;)

I'm doing the same thing this time as I did with my last, which is just feed LO whenever she wakes up from a nap.  Since she's taking a lot of short naps, she eats a lot, maybe every 2 - 2.5 hours, plus before bed and usually an extra feeding somewhere in the evening because she's more fussy then.

Once my first was on a more consistent 3 nap schedule, then he was eating 5 times a day - when he woke up, after each nap, and before bed.  Once it was 2 naps, then 4 feedings a day.

I should add that this consistent 3 nap schedule didn't happen until 4ish months.  Then he started taking longer naps instead of little cat naps.
  • This is all so good to know!! Thanks @erin79 @orangecurls @Knottie76365376 @Hawk&Eye
  • Yes thanks so much everyone!! I was anticipating more of a schedule similar to what you have said about after each nap. So around the 4 month mark. It's encouraging to hear that this actually was the case for some of you
