Items to avoid on registry

Hi ladies! I haven't seen any recent registry posts but I am curious what items you found are just plain unnecessary to register for?

There is so much STUFF out there and I have heard lots about must haves, now I'm curious about the stuff that was just unused and a waste of space :)

Thanks in advance!

  • I didn't register for any clothes. We are team green and I don't really want or need a ton of gender neutral clothes, just a few sleepers to get us started. Plus people always end up buying you clothes anyways. I've also heard the diaper genie isn't worth it.
  • FTM here I personally wont be putting many clothing items especially in new born size on the registry for two reasons. They grow out of the clothes quick and my family tends to get a gift and accompany with clothing anyways. Things like little socks and hats I am also not registering for. Ive done about 90% of my registry within the last week. Im trying to put it together so that it is varying in price range but also I definitely edited online several times to cut out any miscellaneous crap when I got scan happy (:

  • I had a wipes warmer with my first and literally only used it for the first two or three weeks, maybe less. I'm not sure that I'll get another one for this baby.
My little girl screamed during diaper changes no matter what temperature the wipes were!
Also here's a little tidbit for you, if your baby gets bad hiccups (like mine did) and they scream during diaper changes just go change their diaper because the screaming interrupts the hiccups and they stop!!

FTM but I've looked after infants and I always though baby nail clippers were silly. Normal ones have always worked fine. My mother said diaper genie was unnecessary. The registry person said no to clothes that weren't basics because they change out so often in stores.
  • Wipe warmer is useless! I didn't get one but never wished I did. We love the diaper genie!!! Without it the house smells bad really fast! I day it's totally worth it to not be taking out the trash a million times a day. Especially with a December baby when it is so cold outside! Leave clothes off the registry too.
  • Crib bumpers! You can't use them, but people register for them as part of bedding. No idea why.

Go on Amazon and look for the Baby Bargains book. Make sure you find the 11th edition - it will tell you exactly what you need and don't need, as well as explanations of everything under the sun. I don't know what I would have done without it!

Reading now! Got it this weekend and it's such a huge help. After seeing it mentioned so many times on here I ordered last weekend :)
  • I'm a FTM as well. I didn't put down clothes as we don't know the gender yet, but I most likely won't be putting any down because I have so many baby clothes that will be handed down to me. But also because most people usually buy clothes anyways, and I'd love to go buy some of my own cute little outfits.
We are putting down a diaper genie because we live in a small apartment complex on the top floor, and the dumpster is in the alley behind the complex. I think diaper genies are great for when you don't have access to your own trash bin outside =]
  • Wipe warmer and receiving blankets (we got soooo many).

Diaper genie - we still use ours.

Pacifiers and bottles - wait to see what your Lo likes . We registered for advent bottles hut had to switch to dr brown
  • @Marchmellow2 I'm thinking we might register for 2 diaper genies, the nursery and my office are upstairs but our master is on the main floor, so diaper changes will be on both levels. I can't stand any sort of bathroom smells, especially as the weather warms up and smells just get worse
  • Not only do you not need a wipes warmer, they breed bacteria. Never a good idea!

Along with crib bumpers don't buy or register for the whole crib set. Yes it's cute and matches the nursery theme. But You can't use a blanket in the crib either. Just register for a few sets of sheets and a mattress liner-2 actually!

If you want to register for clothes, do so in the larger sizes. Like 6 months + I had a ton of smaller clothes and went to get DD dressed one day a few months later and had nothing that fit!

I never knew what to do with receiving blankets. I honestly still don't! Too small to swaddle the baby in, too big as a burp cloth. They just confuse me.

Just in my experience they're great for throwing over the shoulders of people who smell offensive before holding baby. Especially smokers and perfume abusers!
    But that's about it.
  • Nail Clippers- I would recommend the ones that have the light underneath or the magnify glass. We still use ours and it makes it much easier to see when cutting the nails. Diaper Genie- We still use the diaper genie and I recommend it to people. Agree about baby shoes. They are a waste of money before they are able to crawl/walk.

  • I I had a diaper genie with my first and was so excited to get it and when I tell you I used it for a whole one month! The refills can get pretty expensive if your on a budget and if someone purchases it for you it comes with some and they may or may not get you some refills leaving u to purchase when instead a good whole garbage pail that closes and scented garbage bags from the dollar store walmart or target did me just fine plus fiancé takes out garbage everyday so not like their was a smell lingering
  • I hundredth the "wipe warmers are a waste" sentiment.

However, we still use our diaper pail. We don't have the Diaper Genie. We have the Munchkin Arm & Hammer one. DD is almost two and we use it every day. We also use the baby nail clippers with her.

The only thing I'd say about baby shoes is if it gets cold. We didn't have any baby shoes for DD, either, because we figured she didn't need any until she was walking, but socks only keep their feet so warm, so I was wondering if shoes would help to keep them warmer. Maybe we look into baby booties to go over the socks?

  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies. Random question on diaper pails/diaper genie. Do the diapers compact down more? Our city garbage is every other week for a 35gal can so we need to decide if it's appropriate to upgrade our service.
  • Never even knew that a wipe warmer was a thing. That seems so excessive.

No they don't compact. They just go in and hang out. Looks like a weird diaper burrito when you pull it out.

Totally agree. My oldest was a summer baby. So this wasn't an issue. And I don't really see it as an issue with this one because I become a hermit after a baby. But I think little sweater boots would be good to have just in case.
  • Don't register for clothes it is very hard for people to find the clothes you picked in the store.
  • Actually my baby gal always wore shoes especially if we were going anywhere. Totally get that it's pointless but it just made the outfit :)

I'd also say that you don't need BOTH a crib mobile and a sound machine. We used the mobile for sound. We never used the sound machine. Although I do know many that did.

We had a rock and play and a bouncer and never used the bouncer. So not sure you need both.
  • Ditto to wipe warmer being a waste.

We also have the arm and hammer diaper pail and use it daily.

One thing I got a lot of and didn't use was swaddle blankets. My LO hated being swaddled. We loved sleep sacks (and some sleep sacs have optional swaddling which you can leave their arms out of if you want). Two birds, one stone there. The swaddle ones are also warmer for our winter babies even if you're "swaddling" with arms out.

  • I love my Diaper Champ. Uses regular kitchen trash bags. I do not put #2 diapers in there though.

Items I found useless: baby bathrobe, socks (most are crappy), receiving blankets, baby lotion/oil/powder.

As for nail clippers, I only use the clippers when the baby gets a little older. For newborns, I just peel the nail, or use a little emery board.

  • Target newborn socks are pretty good. The Just One You kind. Those are the only ones that stayed on DD's feet when she was teeny tiny.

  • I love my diaper genie and plan to get another one for this baby.
Also..don't forget to put some breast feeding supplies on there, Nipple cream, breast pads, extra pump parts etc. Even if people don't get them for you (my mom got me mine :) I believe target gives you 10% off everything left on your registry that you still want to get!

Agree with wipes warmers being a waste and hazard.

Some of these things will be trial and error and baby preference. Some babies like being swaddled, some don't. We like the hospital receiving blankets for swaddles when the kids were tiny. Then we used the Aden & Anais ones when they got a little bigger.

We generally didn't mess with baby shoes, but if you would like to try them, I recommend what some people call "crib shoes" that have soft, flexible soles and elastic around the ankle. The elastic helps them stay on a tiny bit better. We didn't use them as much until the kids were sort of bearing weight (standing, sitting in a jumper or exersaucer) but they do provide a little more protection against the elements since they are made of (soft) leather. Robeez is a good brand and Target sells a cheaper similar kind.
  • We use our diaper pail a ton. After trying both diaper genie and munchkin arm & hammer pail I much prefer the munchkin one. It just seems so much easier to me to empty.

We used receiving blankets a lot for emergency burp cloths, lap covers, towels, and tucking around baby's legs and feet in the car seat when it was cold.

My son had long feet when he was born. No newborn socks would fit him. The socks wound up as scratch mits to get use out of them. Instead we found Circo toddler socks at Target fit him perfectly and stayed on until he got old enough to pull them off.

Can I just say that "people who smell offensive" made me giggle. :)
