Traveling with new baby

I wanted to get advice on traveling with our 1 month old. We are moving and it will be over a 13 hour drive to our new home and will be stopping half way to stay at hotel over night. I am currently breast feeding and pumping. I was thinking I'll need to save up milk ahead of time and store it in a cooler for day 1 of trip and have frozen milk to put in cooler for day 2. Any advice on how to do this properly? My mom will be riding along to help to feed baby while he is in car seat. He is eating every 1-2 hours now. I will also have to make stops along drive to pump. I could buy a car adapter for my pump since I'm unsure how I could pump in a restroom while making a stop. Also any advice on keeping little one happy for long trip in a car seat? I hope he sleeps most of it but I'm worried about him getting fussy from being in seat too long.

Re: Traveling with new baby

  • we just did a much shorter trip (5 hours) and my son only got fussy to eat once. We just used that opportunity to get gas and I fed him in the front seat. That gave him a chance to stretch his legs and get some mommy time. I'm sure you already know, but be very careful feeding him in his car seat. I had 2 friends that did that and the baby started choking and they had to very quickly pull over and get their child out of the seat to help them. It was very scary for them.

    Good luck on your trip!

  • Bring ice packs for your cooler but also fill the cooler up with ice at the hotel at night and with fresh ice in the morning. When you stop for gas, get ice to refill. I've had very good luck with asking the gas station attendant for just taking ice from the pop machine. As long as I bought something else, they've never said no.

Another option is to use a car adapter or battery pack to pump in the car and feed that to LO, eliminating the need to freeze pumped milk or heat frozen milk. I did this one 9 hr car ride. I sat in back to pump, fed LO with a bottle, and rode up front when LO slept. As long as you use the milk in a few hours, the bottle can sit in a cup holder until you need it. As pp said, be careful feeding. We took lots of breaks so LO ate more slowly and didn't have problems.

    Good luck!
  • We did an overnight just 2 hours away from home, but I took pumped bottles for 2 feelings, then used what I pumped for the rest. It eliminated bringing so many bottles. Like what @Sammy K said.

Also +1 on the car adapter. I've used it while flying down the highway (riding, not driving). I've actually used the car adapter a ton already. One day our power was out a home--pump in the car.

We just did a 3 day drive at 5 weeks. The longest leg was nine hours, we left at 3am after the MOTN feeding, so LO would sleep as much as possible, and it took us 13 hours LO had one fussy day, but for most of it he slept or chilled out in the car. He's not really into toys yet, was plenty entertained by looking out the window. I would stroke his head or hold his hand to calm him down.

I haven't been able to pump, so except for a couple small bottles I expressed, we stopped every time he needed to eat. We changed diapers and fed right in the car.

  • I just did a long trip. On the way there I had pumped milk and chilled bottles-my daughter hated the cold milk and it was difficult to get her to eat. I also had to pump anyway along the way to prevent engorgement and supply issues. On the way back I would just pump a few minutes before I knew it was time for her to eat and give her fresh milk-she didn't mind the bottle at all then. And it was easier. I have a manual pump and I would just stop and was it when we would stop to burp her/get gas. No choking issues either.
  • We did a 13 hour trip when my twins were 2 mo this and it was the easiest trip. I would actually make sure to stop every 2/3 hours and take little one out of the car seat and get him to stretch and feed. It would only take 15 minutes but it might make the trip go by smoother...that's what we did! And we didn't get out of the car since it was Wi tee in the Rockies.
