Supply issues with mini pill

my DD is 7 weeks old and is going through a growth spurt at the exact time my milk seems to be disappearing. I have not had any supply issues up to this point and was even able to pump extra to have for emergencies. Now i can barely keep up with her wanting to constantly feed all day long and finally had to give in and give her formula. Also, I started the mini pill exactly one week ago today. I'm not sure if it's the sudden increase in demand that has lowered my supply or the mini pill. Anyone else having Supply issues with the mini pill? ?

Re: Supply issues with mini pill

  • Just curious how you know your supply has decreased? Are you pumping less or is LO upset after finishing eating?

The reason I ask is that I've heard around 6-8 weeks is when your breasts will stop feeling so full and often times women think their supply has decreased when this is not the case. I'm not saying this is true necessarily for you, but just want to throw it out there if that's the reason you think your supply has decreased.

  • It's definitely decreased. LO is never satisfied, and when i pumped i got one oZ when i typically get 3-4 oz. Also when i decided to finally give her formula after she wanted to feed constantly all day she gulped it down as if she were starving.
  • I made the same post last week but no one commented on it. Yes I had problems with the pill. The very first time I took it I noticed my supply decreased. It would be decent in the morning until I took the pill in the afternoon, and then it would just dry up. I know it wasn't just my breasts not feeling so full because I tried pumping for like 15 minutes and nothing came out. I stopped taking it and things are back to normal, except it made me start my period again
  • My LC told me not to take the pill when nursing as it kills the milk supply. So we use other forms of protection. You are prob definitely seeing a decrease
  • I am taking the pill and also noticed a decrease in supply. I've been on it a month now and it seems to be getting better. LO eats every 2.5-3 hrs and is satisfied now. it seemed like she was eating all the time when I started the pill. I'm only pumping like an ounce after she eats but that's extra. I'm also taking fenugreek and upped my dosage 2 pills 3 times a day

  • So glad you posted this! I'm very apprehensive about starting the mini pill and this solidified my decision to not take it. I really don't want to lose my supply or even risk having supply issues, so again, thank you for posting! :)
  • I noticed the same thing! I have gone off of the mini pill as of this week (using other bc methods) and am tracking my supply with an app to see if it goes back up to where it was before I started. I used to get around 4-5 oz. per side when I pumped and now it's 2-3 oz. per side since taking the pill. A lactation consultant was the one who let me know that this could be the reason and to maybe stop taking the pill and use other methods. Wish they told us this before we started taking the pill...
