Strep B positive

hello? I'm so nervous? I need to take antibiotics for my labor so that my baby doesn't get it. Is this something common? Should I just be calm? I'm so upset I saw myself dealing with my contractions in a bath before I go to the hospital. And the doctor told me I shouldn't go in a bath because I wouldn't know if my water broke or not...

Anyone have experience? What should I do to help with contractions if not go into a bath?

Re: Strep B positive

  • Shower. If at hospital, use a shower chair or get one for at home. That was a concern I had when I found out I was positive.

It is very common. I am taking comfort in knowing that a friend of mine who is a professional, prefers natural things and very healthy lifestyle was positive when she delivered her son last fall. Because, I felt like I failed and got myself positive.

It is very common. When I found out I was strep positive I had a meltdown in the whole foods parking lot... lots of tears! I texted all of my close friends with babies about how I was freaking out. 3 of the 6 responded "Stop- we were strep positive too, it is no big deal." I had no idea that 50% of them had it too! So 4 of 7 women (me included) were strep positive.

My water broke in the hospital, but I wouldn't take any chances with bathing. Stick to showers. Your water might not even break. It is actually less common for your water to break than it is to be strep B positive.

The antibiotics are nothing. They hook them up to your IV/fluids. Your arm will burn a little from the potassium that they have to give with the IV, but it's nothing! As I said in another post, you are about to push something out of your vag- so do not worry about the IV burn. Small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

Your baby will  be fine. Trust. The statistic is like 1 in 2,000 babies will need some sort of treatment if mom is strep B positive and on antibiotics during labor. Just get the meds, and all will be cool. So common. So not a big deal!

    Hope that helps!
  • I was too and they just gave me iv antibiotics before induction and every 4 hours of labor after that. I will say the first dose of antibiotics burn your arm pretty bad. I asked for a warm compress and that helped a lot. The other doses didn't hurt. Baby and mom are both doing fine :)
  • Okay! Thanks everyone! So u think I could still be in the shower? But wouldn't I also not know if my water broke while being in the shower or will I know? I'm a FTM, so I'm clueless.
  • It will be lots of water, may not gush. My water was broke for me and it would run down my legs (thank goodness for mesh undies and pads or I would not have been walking around. I thought I wouldn't know... But it was obvious. It's also slippery, my nurse and I about biffed it in the bathroom. Be careful! My guess is you could be in the shower as long as you already had meds
  • I just found out I'm strep b positive as well. No biggie just another antibiotic when I go in to have my c section.
  • My water broke at home (small trickle, it took another small trickle an hour later to convince myself it really had broke) and I got the antibiotics at the hospital. I honestly didn't even notice the antibiotic going in, but they had also used lidocaine to start my IV, so maybe that helped? This all happened the the night after I was swabbed for strep b, so my results weren't back yet. Turns out it was negative anyway, but better safe than sorry!
