The dreaded constipation monster

Okay ladies I need help! I am no stranger to constipation I've had it on and off my whole life. However I've been pretty good thus far I'm 20 weeks this wed. And I'm so uncomfortable!
Any tips of relief?! Was approved to take colace and miralax ( one or the other) but I hate to have to take anything!
Any tricks besides the high fiber and lots of fruits?!
Also I feel like being so backed up has slowed how much I can feel our baby moving. I know there patterns are so spartic this early doc says they don't look for constant movement till 25 weeks. But can't help but think its maybe related.

Re: The dreaded constipation monster

  • Ugh, I was just thinking about this.  I had horrible constipation with my first pregnancy and now it is starting up again with this one.

I just take miralax and that seems to help as well as eating lots of fruit.  I am also going to buy a Squatty Potty real soon.  My sister has one and she says it really helps.

Supposedly Bed Bath and Beyond and Target sells them now.

  • What is a squatty potty?! I'm interested?!
  • Never mind lol I saw the link :D
  • Prunes! I've had constipation with this pregnancy, STM, and eat a few prunes now and then to help.
  • I have had constipation from day one when I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks n tried everything under the sun including increasing activity, drinking at least 80 oz. Water a day, increased high fiber fruits n veggies, miralax, metamucil, increasing magnesium, etc n ended up taking colace daily. If I miss a day I know it but was miserable 2 say the least without it. Best of luck!

Squatty potty is my best friend!
  • Grapes and lots of water help me. Hope you find something that works.
  • Nothing at ALL is working for me now, I haven't had this issue until 2nd tri... I've been taking colace everyday, drink 4-5 bottles of water a day and NOTHING. When I do go... It's usually me cramping until I'm in tears then I explode or I almost don't make it... Then I get backed up for days again. It's a brutal cycle and I have no idea what to do, prune juice does work.... It cramps me like no other though and takes a day or two for it to kick in...
  • Lol this may sound weird and not the healthiest but I literally just eat Taco Bell for some reason since being pregnant Taco Bell has always had me in the bathroom a few hours later. And I too have been suffering from constipation.

My best friend/co worker/due date buddy swears the same thing! Haha!

I started eating one prune a day (usually with my prenatals). It's been working wonders for me!
  • @beccachartier lol it's so true I promise that's the only time I can get some relief but my SO is really strict about me eating a lot of fast food he hates it. But I'm like its the only thing that helps my tummy!

I love Taco Bell. Totally doesn't have that effect on me though. Haha

I totally laughed at the Taco Bell suggestion; I've definitely used that one in the past!

...since I haven't been to the Bell in a while, what I've found helpful since getting pregnant is drinking a small cup of coffee - with the caveats that a) you already drink coffee and b) haven't had caffeine yet. Though I've sometimes found decaf to work too.
  • Magnesium sulfates. It's a liquid you get at the drug store....taste horrible but worked within hours. I had to do it.
  • I started eating raisin bran every morning for breakfast and sometimes a small bowl for an afternoon snack (because I love it), and it has helped me tremendously!
  • Increase fluids to 1 gallon of water/day, miralax daily, increase fiber, and exercise. This is what my Dr suggested. I have trouble with the gallon a day but i do try. Fiber and exercise well...i eat prunes and some fiber bars. I try and walk daily. But, what really worked, is a old remedy that we used with our patients in the hospital which were exteremely constipated: Warm a cup of Prune juice and add a dose of Miralax to it...doesnt taste very good, but it will get you going! It worked on me and every patient i ever gave it to...of course not everyone is the same though :) Hope it helps!
