Pinched Nerve from Nursing

LO is about 3.5 weeks now. We have been exclusively breast feeding and I know this was caused from my terrible posture of hunching over her to accommodate her positioning. I have had such a sharp pain that started in my neck and then worked my way down into my shoulder, elbow and wrist for over two weeks.

Wondering if anyone else has something similar? How did you resolve? It has been so painful, that I haven't been able to pick up LO and have had to depend on someone else for help. My Dr. gave me a prescribed muscle relaxer, but it made me too out of it and loopy at night to deal with night time feedings, that I stopped taking that. I had some left over Tylonel pain pills from delivery to mask the pain at night but now I'm out of those. Basically sleeping with a heating pad every night. It has gotten better, but if I move just right... It all comes shooting back up my arm.

Thanks!

Re: Pinched Nerve from Nursing

  • I haven't personal experience with this, but I found that using a boppy pillow helped with positioning in the early days of nursing. As for pain relief, I believe ibuprofen is ok when you're nursing and may be more effective for muscular pain than Tylenol as its anti-inflammatory. It can be tough on the stomach so take it with meals and I wouldn't take it for prolonged periods due to risk of side effects. I would avoid it if you have any history of stomach ulcers, kidney problems or asthma.

  • Yes, I had this week 2 on the upper right side of my back. I had to pick up LO because I am generally on my own with him and my three year old. I was able to figure out a way to do without moving my back much but id often be stifling a scream of pain and just praying to make it from the crib to the bed without dropping him.

Ibuprofen was much better than Tylenol. I took 600mg every 5-6 hours and noticed the spasm would be much worse if I was late on a dose. Other than that movement and stretching along with massage took care of it in 3-4 days. Tough call because moving and stretching seemed like the wrong thing to do, it hurt so much. Can you get in to see more of a specialist, that deals with this type of injury. That was my next step but it resolved just as I was getting panicked about it.

  • Thanks ladies!

I do have a Boppy but found it quite hard to manage. I think because I have a small stature (5'-1") that it pushes LO up to high and that's why I was trying to hunch over rather than pull her to me. Maybe it's because it's new, but the Boppy I have is quite stiff and doesn't fit around me.

I will try the Motrin today. I woke up with the pain in my neck again this morning. Seems like I can get the pain to move but not go away : / .
  • I breastfed our first and always used a boppy, and my back/neck always hurt, this time someone recommend I use a Brestfriend pillow and it helps my back and posture much more than the boppy did.
  • I found the Brestfriend to be more helpful than the Boppy with DD1. More support and stability

  • So funny..I'm 6' and the boppy puts her too low so I hunch over. My posture for feeding is awful. I need to work on this ASAP. I only do cross cradle (my body, and arm length make it really hard to do any position)
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • I wish I would have known about My Breast Friend. The Boppy came so highly recommended by friends, family and online reviews. After trying it, I just don't see how anyone has gotten it to work. Thankfully, I am finally feeling some relief but I am putting the MBF pillow in my Amazon Cart tonight! No way can I go through that again.
  • Oh wow.. I thought I was the only one! My Dr even sent me for tests because she thought I had an infection in my kidneys because the pain was arOund there... I found it much better when I started leaning back a bit to nurse, I made a comfy spot against my wall on my bed with pillows lol
  • I have used icy hot or other muscle ache topical creams. It helps a lot. I had this issue before baby cuz I have bigger breasts. Getting husband to.massage it is awesome....it also helps with intimacy.
  • I've had similar back issues and took the meds that they gave me at the hospital since lo was breastfeeding then I'm sure they are ok. I've been putting ice hot patches on my back too but using pillows at home to help with the right position and more pillows behind me. Helps but still have pain.
