Girl names (? Bethany )

I'm struggling to find a cute girl name we both agree on due to the fact that 10 years ago my fiancé lost his sister, Bethany, in a car accident! It's been extremely hard on him and his family with this loss. He would like to name (if it's a girl) our daughter Bethany Natalia but I don't agree since they already have a hard time and I don't want to have our child growing up in her shadow. I feel extremely selfish about it but I don't want that and wouldn't for anyone. Is it wrong to want this?

Help me! I need a first name to go with the middle name of Bethany!

  • You should try the Baby Names board: https://forums.thebump.com/categories/baby-names. It's probably a more appropriate board for this type of thread.

I can't think of any for Bethany, but maybe if you shortened it to Beth? It's easier to pair first names with short, monosyllable middle names, i.e. Sara Beth, Emily Beth, Laura Beth, Victoria Beth, etc.

  • That's a tough one.  I understand the way you are feeling but also that it's hard to say no to that kind of request.  Maybe have Bethany be her middle name?

  • I think a middle name would be most appropriate as well. Discuss with your husband that you feel every time name was said it would be hard for others (even if not for him), especially the parents. Middle name would be a good compromise.
  • Sorry ladies, left that part out. We are looking into Bethany as a middle name! Just trying to find a name that sounds good but isn't going to over power Bethany since it is a dominant name!
  • I would do something short like Ava, not necessarily that name but you are right, bethany is a tough middle name to match up with.  Now if you did Beth for a middle name almost anything would work.

  • Perhaps....
    Vivian Bethany
    Amelia Bethany
    Hazel Bethany
    Charlotte Bethany

I wouldn't worry too terribly much about the flow since you are honoring a family member with the mn. The only time I find myself using my girls' middle names is when they are in trouble ;)
