Trying to Get Pregnant

Finally Going Off BC!

Hey ladies!

So I've been on nexplanon (BC implant in the arm) for two years now and DH and I have decided it's time to take it out and TTC!

My appointment is this Friday for removal and I'm sooo excited yet a little nervous because my experience has been that I have had zero periods since being on the implant and barely any PMS symptoms either. I know that every woman's body is different but what did all of you experience when first becoming BC free?? I can't even remember the last time my body was without it - maybe 16 years old?! Whew crazy lol!

Thanks in advance! You ladies are awesome :)

Re: Finally Going Off BC!

  • I made the mistake of googling my very painful period the month after I stopped BC. Don't do that, you likely don't have any of the terrible things you will find. Don't be surprised if you have some crazy symptoms.

  • My experience going off the patch in 2003 was really good.
  • I just came off BC and am having a pretty long cycle. (I'm on CD34, but I'm only 8DPO)

The thing that has helped me the most is downloading Fertility Friend, buying a BBT and charting my cycle. I'm soooo glad I did. If not, I would be freaking out by now and wondering when I was going to get my period. Now I don't expect it for a few days longer at least.

@AshPat0525 - I had a little bit longer cycle (O'd on CD 22) but overall I have been doing great off of BCP.  It wasn't the awful experience that I had anticipated, at least so far.

ETA:  I was on hormonal BCP for more than 10 years due to PMDD.
  • I was on BCP for many years and got off in April. The best advice is to not expect anything. It can take a few months to a year for the body to get back to normal after a hormonal BC. It can be very frustrating at first with irregular periods, spotting, cramping and hormones.

  • I was on BCP since I was 15 years old (I'm 29 now). I came off the pill in April and I had no idea what to expect. I got what I thought was a period a couple of days after when I would normally get it when I was on the pill, but looking back on it now, I think it was just 5 days of heavy spotting. Then my next cycle I started charting and that was 31 days, O'ed on day 21. Now this cycle it looks like I'm going to O somewhere around days 14-16. So I've been all over the place!
My best advice would be to start charting with BBT! It will give you a much better idea of what is going on with your body and when to expect things to happen.

I'm also type 1 diabetic and another awesome perk of coming off BC was that my blood sugars have been so much better since then :)

    Good luck!

  • Welcome!

I went off the pill last September, and had several really long (50-75 day) anovulatory cycles. My cycle that started June 24 is the first time I've ovulated since coming off BC. Hopefully you don't have to wait so long to ovulate! :)
  • This is my first cycle of birth control and if I don't become pregnant this month then I could be getting my period at the end of the month or not. I'm temping to figure out what is going on with my body. But I did experience getting acne and for some reason my breast are not as full as they use to be, and that's every upsetting! But I am curious as to what my period will be like. Hopefully I will still have short painless cycles! That would be the best outcome.

I came off BCP - Yaz for the last time in May. I have been on and off the pill since September of 2014 due to horrible side effects so since then i went though maybe 3 packs of birth control pills in about 8 months? Anyway, once I officially started TTC in May I had 1 loong cycle of 38 days, however, in the past my cycles off BCP have been as long as 75 days. The main thing i will suggest is DO NOT read into your symptoms the first month you're off it. I was extremely fatigued, nauseated and bloated with headaches/bachaeaches/ovulatory pains for the majority of the month from my body getting used to my OWN hormones. This is my 2nd month and I'm feeling pretty good so far. I would also suggest going ahead and starting to temp and chart your cycles. the book "Taking Charge of your Fertility" is very helpful and I would recomend reading it.

  • I went off my BCP's in May after 8 years! My period was3 weeks late...I was totally freaking out (the pills made things extremely predictable so it caught me off guard). When it finally came, that was the worst period I could ever imagine having.... but I'm glad it finally happened so now I can focus on the baby making! Good luck to you. I'm sure you'll be fine!
  • Such a range of responses! Thanks everyone, I just got my copy of TCOYF
  • I went off the pill after about 2 years or so. I got my withdrawal bleed at the normal time, and then my first real AF about 30-35 days later. I was really impatient waiting for it. After that AF, I ovulated around CD 23 and had the next AF at CD 31. I was freaked out about my LP, but this cycle was more normal. I have noticed that I am more moody off the pill, but also have a much better sex drive. I also noticed much less bloating and crazy appetite. I am back to my old self :).

I went off BCP back in December and it'a been quite the ride! The first 3 months mimicked my BCP days and then the 4th cycle-now have been a roller coaster - relatively unpredictable cycles and few predictable signs. The BBT thermometer and FF really helped me at least figure out when to expect my period. I had been on the pill over 10 years and prior to that I had always had irregular periods. The best advice my midwife told me was to just keep using the BBT and don't obsess over the data (hard, I know!!). One cycle would be 28 days and last month it was 40. Good luck!!

  • Do NOT Google anything because the horror stories are endless and everyone's body is different! I haven't had a period for FIVE cycles after BC. I had blood work and ultrasounds done to rule out any serious issues (PCOS, blockages etc) and now I'm on metformin to get things going again; write down any questions you think of to ask your doc at the appointment so you don't forget anything :) Hope everything goes back to normal for you!!
  • I just want to share with you not to get discouraged when TTC after Nexplanon. I got mine out and started TTC and it took seven months to actually conceive. I tried OPKs but nothing worked. I was so upset, all of my friends were announcing their pregnancies and I was so jealous. Finally one day we decided to stop trying and if it was going to happen it would happen, and eight days after we got married, we conceived! It will happen but it takes time! Don't give up!
