Terrified of spinal anesthetic..

I'm 9 days away from my second c-section. The first one was not planned and I had 2 epidurals, the first one was put in wrong, and the second one was great. This time I'm getting a spinal, and I'm freaking out. Any words of confidence from mom's that have had a spinal anesthetic?

Re: Terrified of spinal anesthetic..

  • Lurking from June. FTM, had a c-section and my spinal went great. Wasn't really painful at all, just a slight sting for a few seconds. My recovery went well too. It helped that I had a really good anesthesiologist and nurses who explained everything and coached me throughout the process.

  • My two spinals we not painful at all. Really didn't feel it, as they numb the area before hand. You got this! GL

  • Never had a c-section, but had an epidural with my first. Can't wait to get it again! I thought I had a high tolerance for pain, but apparently childbirth is off the Richter scales...
  • Had my csection last weeks. The spinal wasn't painful. Lots of pressure though.

  • Had a spinal almost two weeks ago. I barely felt it. Take a deep breath in and breath out when they do it. It was no worse than getting the flu shot for me, just in your back.
  • Thank you mamas! I will be reading these on the way to the hospital!
  • I had an epidural that failed, and 2 spinals.. As for pain level.. It feels about the same. Less painful actually cause it's a smaller needle and they numb you for it, also less risk of spinal headaches because of the smaller needle, and it's not left in like an epidural.

Two spinals here and just like many of the other mamas have commented there was not much pain, just take a deep breath. For me the absolutely best part is the moment all the body aches, cramping, pressure and other general late pregnancy aches and pains disappear. All of a sudden you are comfortable and focused on the miracle that is meeting your baby for the first time. So exciting and I am sure you will do fabulously!
  • The only part of the spinal I felt was the lidocaine and the pain relief was phenomenal! That being said, I'm very glad it goes in your back where you can't see anything! You've got this!
  • Had my second c section 2 weeks ago and the spinal was the easiest part by far. Jad an epidural with my first and the spinal was way easier.
  • I loved the spinal. It was great! I didn't have any issues getting it and it took effect almost immediately. I had a reaction to it. My nose started itching like crazy afterwards but they gave me some mess for it and it went away. The only other reaction I had was swelling but that could happen to anyone after birth. It was all in my legs and it went away very soon after t started.
  • I've always ended up throwing up after spinal in my recovery room, don't know why? And my epidural only worked on one side.
