I have back labor that makes me get up. I also try to breathe deeply through them. Inhale through nose (hold breath for 3 sec). Exhale through mouth. If they sold epidurals on the street I'd be a junkie. Can't wait to get some relief!
This time around I found rocking side to side on my feet helped. At the hospital when things got more intense a low-throated groan/yell was most effective. I got some ideas from the book "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth."
Is there any tricks you mommas have seen to help the pain? Doing anything to make it go a little quicker ?
I hear sitting in a bath, but I'm strep b positive so I can't do that being I won't know if my water broke or not:(
I wouldn't let that put you off having a bath in early labour, lots of women don't break their water until late on and when it happened for me I knew- it was like giving birth to a water balloon lol.
TENS is also very good, plus heat (hot water bottle/heat pads etc) and massage x
I did the child birth classes where we discussed different relaxation techniques. While learning them I figured it was probably just a joke and the epidural would get me through it. : ). However, I ended up needing a c-section so while waiting I did use one trick from class to tolerate contractions. When it starts, breath in and tense your muscles with it, but only for a second, then try to completely relax on the exhale. It may have just been a distraction, but it seemed to help! I think a massage or pressure on the lower back would have helped, too!
Focus on keeping the rest of your body as relaxed as possible. Dont tense up with the contractions, just let them happen. Especially keep your jaw loose. There are many exercises to help loosen your jaw such as horse blowing or I just hang my mouth open limp and shake my head. Looks funny but a loose open mouth helps relax the cervix so it can dialate. Sitting on the toilet was the most relieving thing for me and you naturally open up there because you are used to opening there to poop. Low vocalizations are great. Fight the urge to get higher pitched as that causes you to tense. Remember the cervix is a spincter. The more you relax and stay calm the easier it is to open up. Like someone already said, look up videos of Ina May Gaskin. I learned so much from her and had an amazing natural birth and felt like her tips really helped me manage the pain well.
@kmhefner01 thank you for this! I often retreat to the toilet because I'm not sure of I'll vomit, poop, pee, or hide from DH or DS looking at me breathe in and our thru the contractions. I'm seriously fighting going in tonight.
