LO waking up early?

Anyone else have a LO that is waking up before the crack of dawn?

LO used to go down around 10, wake up for 2 night feedings and sleep until at least 7am.

Now that she is sleeping for longer stretches, and only waking for 1 night feed... she's been waking up around 5:30 and refusing to go back to sleep. Well this morning it was 4:30. I fed, changed, burped like I always do for night feeds, but she refuses to go back down. She's awake and ready for her day! This is harder than getting up for more frequent feeds!! It doesn't make sense to me.... and I'm so not a morning person!

Anyone in the same boat or have advice? I'm thankful for the longer stretches, but 6 hours total just doesn't seem like enough sleep for an 8 week old.

Re: LO waking up early?

  • Mine is still doing the two wakings but sleeps happily until at least 8am.

Sometimes I have to put him in the R'n'P for the morning (after 5:30am)-that's where he does best if there is light in the room.  Have you tried having her continue to sleep in something cozier than a crib mattress (R'n'P or swing)?

  • How old is she? She might be ready to start transitioning to an earlier bedtime. I know it sounds backwards but it can sometimes help them to sleep longer. I've heard it recommended that in the 3rd month you start moving bedtime earlier with the goal between 8-9pm.

Sorry I'm not much help. My brain isn't working as it's 5am and DS apparently wants to eat all night...
  • Thank you both! I do try to get her to nap in our "old school" hand me down RnP that doesnt rock itself. Sometimes she'll nap but I have to rock it lol. Swing doesn't do much.

We have been working on an earlier bedtime... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. She's pretty unpredictable and our bedtime routine can take upwards of 2 hours. then there's nights like last night... we got her down at 9 but then she woke up at 10 and had to be put back down again... so I don't really consider that an earlier bedtime. I'll keep trying and hope it's just a phase!
  • I've heard that if you move a bedtime up 15 minutes it takes LO 3 days to adjust. Not sure how true this is. So you might want to try slowly moving it up every few days. It's great to start a bedtime routine now but unfortunately until LO is 3 months their sleep schedule can be very variable. This is what my sleep consultant says anyway. I'm no expert myself but I share what she tells me haha!! I am hoping to start moving DS's bedtime up soon. Right now we aim for sometime between 9-10. But it doesn't always happen that way!
  • I agree... bedtime is very loose for us... I tend to be in the "4th trimester" camp, so I'm not putting too much pressure on LO or myself for another month or so.
