Nursing on one side only

My LO sometimes only wants one side. I know that breast milk supply is based on supply and demand and am worried this will cause my production to slow. Does anyone deal with this from time to time and do you pump on the other side or just go with it?

Re: Nursing on one side only

  • My LO only eats from one side at a time. I just make sure to feed from the other side at the next feeding. It took some time but my supply stabilized and now I have no problem!

  • The supply is quite different for me on either side. DS (4 months) likes the low supply side for comfort nursing and the high side for filling up when he's hungry. Sometimes we do just one side, sometimes both. I used to worry about it but it doesn't seem to be a problem for me. So, I just go with the flow.
  • My LO only nurses on one side. If you're trying to build up a freezer supply like I am (going back to work in August) pump the other side while baby is nursing. If not, I don't recommend pumping the other side because it creates an oversupply.
  • My LO recently began nursing on one side and now at 6 weeks I feel like my supply is stabilizing. I personally love it because it makes feedings shorter! I rarely pump the other side because I don't want to create oversupply but ib trying to start my freezer stash
  • DD only takes one side 95% of the time. I'll pump the other side 1-2 times during night feedings to start my freezer stash.
