Sharp, painful cramps

Hello Ladies,

I've been lurking on these boards but hanging back bc after 2 mc this year I am very wary. However, after 3 great ultrasounds with good growth and strong heartbeats I am beginning to feel a little more confident. I have another ultrasound tomorrow at 9 weeks, 5 days.

But last night around 3 am I was awoken by sharp, painful cramps right in the center of my lower abdomen. They lasted about 1-2 minutes and then went away after I drank some water. I have had no bleeding and they haven't come back but now I'm totally freaked out!

I've had lots of round ligament pain and some dullish/stretching cramps but this was something different.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any idea what could cause it?

Re: Sharp, painful cramps

  • I've gotten cramps when I've been dehydrated. Hopefully that's all it is. Best of luck to you!

  • It might also be your uterus stretching sometimes it feels like cramps. Stay hydrated and take it easy. Good luck to you sending you good thoughts.
  • I hope it's just a passing moment, it's so hard not to worry with loss in the past. Wishing you well!
  • Could it be gas? I keep freaking myself out about every little pain then realize that it's more than likely GI related rather than my uterus. Could also be dehydration as others have said. But I'd say definitely give your doctor a call if it persists, if for nothing else than to ease your mind!
  • Ive had a couple strange, sharp cramps over the last week that made me stop and think "Crap!" I just drank more water and assumed its a normal part of the growing process since they stopped and no bleeding. Having already seen and heard babys heartbeat helped a ton. Hope this helped!

  • Were they like cramps or shooting pains? I say shooting because mine felt like the shot from top to bottom? I had those a couple of days around 8-9 weeks (also hx of m/c so super panicky about everything) but saw/heard baby a week later and all was good! Sending good vibes all will be well!

I had these in the middle of the night when I was a bit dehydrated and super tired a couple of times around the week 6 mark, if I remember correctly. It was sharp and painful but went away when I drank water and cozied in bed. (I'd been up late traveling and restricting fluids to avoid restroom breaks.) I don't know if I would have experienced that otherwise, but I figured they were related somehow. That and/or gas... We'd eaten late, too.

  • You ladies are so wonderful! THANK YOU for your responses!

PaniaO- so funny you mentioned that because we drove 11 hours from Montana to Seattle that day and I think I was also restricting fluids, etc!
