Baby lost 14% body weight, dr makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong..

my baby boy was born at 37+3... He had a hard entry into this world... He then was circumcised the next day. Which caused him to go hours without eating. The nurses told me to let him sleep and it's common.. He lost 14% body weight by the time we left the hospital (Friday), saw his pediatrician the following Monday and she made it seem like I've been starving him...
I now have been waking him every two hours in the dot and force feeding him boob and bottle supplement! I feel terrible and he's not happy either, he seems full still and so sleepy.. We see his pediatrician again tomorrow for a weight check and I'm hoping he's gained enough to make her back off..

Is anyone else facing a sleeping baby who doesn't want to eat every two hours? How often are other moms feeding? Is anyone else having to supplement with a
Bottle and formula? - if you are, am I along feeling like im failing??

OUR BIRTH STORY
-- Things got scary but now are in the past thank goodness and he is ok! Now just trying to get him to gain weight and eat every two Hours is my struggle, he came at 37 weeks and all he wants to do is sleep! So it struggling getting him to eat and getting my milk to fully come in... It's in but don't have enough yet to keep up with the amount of feedings I have to do

So, I was induced due to preeclampsia...
Had the induction done and then wasn't progressing for a few hours ...I then said I think I'm having contractions and the nurse said no way I just checked you, you're not even dilated! Then I started contracting and wasn't calm about it and she said ok I'll check you but I know your not progressed that far yet.. Well she checked and I was 4 centimeters dilated! She literally hit my leg and said girl You're 4 centimeters! Do you want an epidural? I said yes, she said lets do it! We did the epidural, (this wasn't a pleasant experience for me, the guy was learning, little did I know.. He stuck me four times in the back, finally I said what's the problem?! If you can't do it get someone who can, I'm contracting and you expect me to sit still!? Finally the man training him took over and it was successful..) contractions were getting stronger and closer together and she checked me again and I was 8 centimeters. we waited a few more contractions and checked again and I was 10... In the mean time they were calling my dr saying come quick!

So I started pushing..
And pushing and pushing and pushing and I pushed for a few hours.. Got him far enough that everyone was saying ok a few more pushes, we can already see his hair! - this we're going fast!! - Then asked my husband to Come look.. He went and saw hair, they had him down there while i pushed and two nurses held my legs and I pushed and baby's heart rate dropped. Then when I pushed again, it dropped again... It was lower but kept coming back up so dr wasn't to concerned yet.. Then he said lets push again and I did and his heart rate dropped drastically and never came back up... From there I remember everyone yelling for other people and running around then me being ran down a hall way and transferred to another bed and it was crazy from there.
I could see the c section procedure in the light above me. Yes i watched.. I knew my baby had been born by watching it and the pressure I felt.. But I heard no cry. Then my husband disappeared from my side and I lost it, I was asking where's my baby!" " why don't I hear him crying" no one would answer me, I knew he was out where was he, where was my husband!? Finally heard a faint cry. I felt a little better , but what took so long!?

Well baby was born and not breathing. Cord was wrapped around his neck and he was purple. His 1st appgar score was a 3 thankfully in 5 minutes he came up to an 8..

I think they drugged me up even more because I don't remember much from there. In recovery i remember seeing my husband and baby. All I wanted to do was hold
Him but i was shaking so bad they wouldn't let me. My husband looked like a mess, I asked if he was ok and he told
Me what had happened to our new baby boy. I was a wreck!! I wanted him
In my arms even more then!!

The rest of the time in the hospital he was in my arms, skin to skin. I don't know about anyone else but I was never dressed I wanted my baby to feel safe. If he left my sight my husband went with him.

This was a hard experience for all of us tongi through but now we are home and our battle of feeding seems so hard hntil
I think back for June 29th and the difficulty my new baby boy went though to come
Into this world..

  • Aw!! My baby girl was 6.12 when she was born at 37.2. I started bottle feeding, then decided to strictly breast feed. She lost to 6.8 in the hospital which was no big deal. But then a couple days later at wic she lost to 6.6 and then the next day at her doctors office she lost to 6.3.. I started supplementing with formula and my right breast just stopped producing and my left turned clear.. She was always hungry, and always uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable.. And worried. So worried. So I put her straight on formula (despite a few days/nights of crying because I was failing...) and now she weighs 7.2.

Your story made me cry. Not sure if it's the post pardom hormones. So glad everything went well. Our daughter lost 10% of her birth weight. I had to wake her every two hours to feed. I was pumping after each feeding. That increased my supply. I was feeding her the pumped milk w a syringe in between. I still have to wake her to eat but we gained back 2 oz. It's a lot of work for 2oz! Keep doing what your doing. He will gain it back.
  • It's normal for babies to loose weight or fluctuate with their weight in the first couple weeks. As for the baby being tired all the time and having problems eating...it's also important that your baby gets rest :) Same thing with our little girl, she was born at 37 weeks and weighed 3 lbs 9 oz. we just brought her home from the NICU and she falls asleep while eating and we have to feed her every 2 hours as well. BUT don't worry, it just takes time. Your baby will grow and learn how to intake food :D and it's ok to switch pediatricians. Personally, I wouldn't like it if our pediatrician blamed me for weight loss and not understand where I am coming from.

My son was born Friday evening and is a sleeper too (as was my first). We have never woken a sleeping baby just to feed. Force feeding isn't working for us so I feed when he's willing and let him go as long as he wants. So far he hasn't lost too much but I would supplement if he did. I probably still wouldn't wake every two hours, especially if he still refused to eat.

  • When you say bottle feeding, do you mean formula? Curious as to if they instructed you to do this or not. Formula is harder for a baby to digest, which will make them feel full for longer. Trying to have them do breast and bottle might get their little tummy confused.

We are in the same boat. Baby was born weighing 6 lbs 12 oz. When we left hospital, berilium levels were a little high and she was slightly jaundiced and weighed 6 lbs 8 oz. Went to pediatrician the next day, she was 6 lbs 3 oz and her berilium levels were higher and she was very yellow. We had to feed every 2 hrs plus supplement with formula. Went to get re-tested today (baby is three days old) and she gained 4 oz and her levels are going back down. She's being re-tested again tomorrow... Dr said we didn't have to "force" feed her anymore, just watch her cues. But, I still feel like I need to until they tell me she's 100%. My milk has just started to come in and I'd prefer to exclusively nurse but my nipples are raw and cracked from the marathon feedings. I'm afraid to pump because I'm already in enough pain!
Anyway, I cried all day yesterday because I thought I did something wrong. This board and talking with girlfriends who are moms and/or nurses made me feel better. I keep praying my princess continues to get better.

Oh, and she pretty much sleeps all the time, too. I'm hoping once she starts gaining weight, she'll have more energy.

My little one was 9 lbs 8 oz when he was born. Four days later, he weighed in at 8 lbs, 7 oz (11% weight loss). We had to go back to the doctor 2 days later to see if he had gained any weight. Between the two doctor appointments, my milk came in, and he gained half of a pound in 2 days as a result.

In the hospital, he was not getting full. I supplemented formula (by using a syringe) in addition to breastfeeding. He now strictly breast feeds now that the milk has come in. I wouldn't worry about the weight loss because the baby will regain the weight once your milk comes in! Try not to be discouraged. Even if you have to supplement some formula (which is something I was vehemently against prior to having the baby), it won't hurt the baby or the baby's progress with breastfeeding. I just would not recommend using a bottle. Using the syringe helps prevent nipple confusion!

    Good luck with everything!
