Currently recovering from c-section...advice/experience?

im 36 hours post delivery with my baby girl. She is healthy and happy and all went relatively well during surgery. However, tonight I'm in a great deal of pain. The nurses keep telling me this is normal because the spinal has worn off. But the pain is extreme and the meds aren't helping as much today vs yesterday. Can anyone share their experience regarding the third and fourth day of recovery? I'm feeling pretty defeated and I'm curious to know when I will start to feel better.

Re: Currently recovering from c-section...advice/experience?

  • Lost and lots of water. I took the full does of pain meds and was sure to take them every 4 hours (or whatever is prescribed) I was also taking motrin. I was in pain for a while, weeks, because I had 30 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing before my c-section. You however, should start to feel better soon. Make sure your voicing this to your doctor and nurses.

  • Definitely take the pain meds on schedule, before you feel like you need them. I started to feel better day 4 (2 and 3 were the worst!). I followed all the precautions closely and didn't need any pain medications after about the first week. Showers at the hospital were the toughest part of my day! Take it easy and hope you start feeling better soon!
  • This is my second day and I feel pretty good. Yes, I have extreme pain once the meds wear off but feel comfortable again once I get my dosage. Even took a shower this morning on my own and have been walking around. I hope this progress continues tomorrow! Good luck!
  • Get up and walk, it helps. Also my pain peaked about day 3-4 then got more manageable. My surgeon switched me from Vicodin to percoset and that helped too. Take whatever pain mess they offer as often as you can...no sense in suffering! Plus the more comfortable you are, the faster you will heal and the better you will be able to care for your new baby!
  • As PP's said, taking the meds on schedule before you feel like you need them is crucial for the first couple days. Beyond that, rest and not overdoing it physically is key.
  • Thank you all for your replies! Between recovery and breast feeding I'm a mess today! Hoping for a batter day tomorrow.
  • Wall walk walk. I had 44 hours of hard labor before my c section, did not tske any pain meds during labor, epidural only because i had to have a c section. No pain meds afterwards except tylenol. Recovered quickly and I attribute it to my push for getting out of bed and moving so early (I'm a PT in a hospital and know the importance of this all too well after any kind of surgery but especially abdominal surgeries). I ran a mini marathon 11 weeks post c section. I'm hoping this 2nd section is just as easy to recover from!!!
  • @mamaklemond this is inspiring. I am hoping to not need a c section, but in the event that I do, I don't want to take narcotics because I want to breastfeed. It's good to know you managed well with Tylenol and early mobility! Props!

  • With my first c section, I was in immense pain. I had the max dose of multiple pain meds and was still hurting. Walking was horrible, breathing was horrible. For what seemed like forever after I was in pain...
This time, I had discomfort and some pain.. But my 3rd time standing up I could walk fairly normal. I took the low doses of meds. And the 4th day went off all but ibuprofen. I'm 16 days post partum and only time I really feel any pain is when I have a cyst (I have chronic cysts and they cause a lot of pain before they rupture) I'm not sure why I had 2 completely different experiences. Or if it's how I mentally handled it.. But either way, my best advice is to walk!! Stay hydrated, take the meds as you need them. And don't get discouraged. There will be days where you feel like a million bucks.. Then that night or next day you will feel like you just had surgery.. Cause you did. Take things day by day. It can take weeks to go back to normal. Everyone is different and every surgery is different. (As I explained with my first, and my second)
  • I stayed at the hospital from Thursday to Monday and I used the pain medications during this time and then after I left I didn't. It worked and helped while I was there. The first week is hard BUT drink a lot of fluids and REST. I also recommend a support band, postpartum wrap...something like that. It will help support your back and help you since you can't move your stomach muscles.

Im following this thread too...my c-section is scheduled for Friday and I am nervous about recovery. I delivered my first vaginally and had a 2nd degree tear, but pain wise it wasnt too bad. This time I have no idea what to expect. Everyone seems to be consistent with keeping on main meds, getting moving and water...Thanks!!!

  • @ambah I have my c section Friday too! It is weird being excited and nervous all at the same time!
  • Yes I'm on my third day and staying hydrated the key walking around helps too I did so much better today so happy for myself first c section don't worry momma well get through this we have to be strong for our LO's
  • I am having my 3rd c section on Friday. All I can say is to drink alot of water, walk as much as you can, and ask for help. Good luck to everyone and their recovery.

You can definitely still take your pain medications and breastfeed. I had trouble with the percocets making me too drowsy but the tylenol 3 is better than nothing, it leaves me just barely uncomfortable but awake (the perc's were taking away all the pain but I could hardly keep my eyes open on them). Day 2-4 are the hardest but as everyone has said, get moving but also rest enough for healing. Eat enough calories so that your body can make milk and also recover and drink plenty of water!
  • Yes take the pain medication as needed and don't wait till the pain is extremely harsh if it's still not the four hours and starting to feel pain take Motrin pills each pill is 200 I take 3 or 4 for extra pain ... And wait for the hard unbearable pain to take cotine pills they prescribe and wear a belly band for support

I had a c section on the 11th - starting to feel like I can do a bit more each day, but when I overdo it my bleeding picks up a bit. Can anyone share when on average the bleeding stops and pads are no longer needed?

  • @tibi5 I had mine on the 5th and I still get random blood gushes

  • I got out of bed 8 hours post c section and got up and walked around. I was only taking two ibuprofen 600 a day. The walking really helped! I am now a week post c section and only stiff in the morning and taking no meds. I also believe breastfeeding helped heal faster. When I was nursing her I would feel no pain whatsoever.
  • @tibi5 I had mine on the 7th and I stopped bleeding yesterday. Whoo hoo! ;)
